	How Music Works
		Eduard Hanslick wrote The Beautiful in Music in 1854 and any explanation and evaluation of his claim that 'the essence of music is sound and motion' must have regard to historical context in determining the author's meaning.
		For Hanslick 'music' meant principally the instrumental and orchestral works of the 18th Century and first half of the 19th Century, the period we might loosely call 'classical'- music whose 'primordial element' was 'euphony' (The beautiful in music, TAB, p.421).
		Hanslick's approach is one which seeks to intellectualise music: 'in music there is both language and logical sequence, but in a musical sense; it is language we speak and understand, but which we are unable to translate.

	What's American About American Music?
		The choral music of Billings has continued to be sung in the South and Appalachia as part of the rural tradition of shaped-note singing.
		Music, so the philosophy went, should derive from the vernacular music of the people, and by the late 1970s, most people's vernacular music was rock.
		Its music should be drawn from the local enviornment, the sounds of home; its forms should be relevant to American society, not to a 19th-century European aristocracy that no longer exists.

		His efforts to produce a new and viable language for church music, incorporating the language of the music drama, earned him as many enemies as friends, but the actual range of style of his religious music encompasses everything from the dramatic gesture to a return to an austere simplicity echoing a much earlier age.
		There is nothing experimental about this music, whatever a number of commentators have suggested: the breakdown of tonality, the openness of the form, the avant-garde harmonies, the avoided comfortable cadences and the trailings away into silence are the products of intense care.
		Plainsong themes were important to Liszt, both for reasons of his faith and because of their intrinsic musical value, and whilst one might expect to encounter them more often in the works of his Roman period in the 1860s, they feature over the whole range of his composing life.

		The earliest legible stones in the Music are incised 1840, one for a son of Zachariah Robertson and another for Ellen Stanley who died March 2 of that year.
		This indicates the very small number of families living near the Music Cemetery in the early 19th century as compared to the number in the early 21st.

	Richard Wagner and his Operas
		The result was that the productions went completely to pieces, singers forgetting their lines and music, and a repetition which was announced could not come off because of a free fight behind the scenes between two of the principal singers.
		In Riga he began the composition of his first great success, "Rienzi." He completed the libretto during the summer of 1838, and began the music in the autumn, and when his contract terminated in the spring of 1839 the first two acts were finished.
		Previous to this, in fact already in the autumn of 1854, he had sketched some of the music of "Siegfried," and in the spring of 1857 the full score of the first act and of the greater part of the second act was finished.

		The Mass of St. Martin De Porres was composed by St. Augustine Music Director Leon Roberts in honor of the Peruvian saint who was the original patron of St. Augustine Parish and the namesake of its first place of worship, the 1857 Chapel of Blessed Martin De Porres.
		Leon Roberts' arguably greatest contribution was to expand the realm of sacred music as well as the musical repertoire of St. Augustine to include an additional emphasis on traditional African American spirituals and hymns and the contemporary works which have become the hallmark of St. Augustine's Gospel Choir.
