Born into a world that accepted the horse as the fastest means of transport, they had the impression of passing through a time warp as their locomotive ate up the miles between major towns at speeds previously considered the stuff of science fiction.
Rail was becoming a world-wide industry, developing in countries as far-flung as Argentina, Algeria and Russia, and driven by British expertise and technology, headed up by confident charismatic and vigorous entrepreneurs.

In 1854, the state permitted the turnpike corporations to give their roads back to the towns through which they passed, and, at about the same time, provided for turnpike franchise forfeiture as the penalty for neglecting repairs.
Water transportation had always been popular and favorable on the Connecticut River, for commerce as well as travel, and the river was still a very active waterway in these years.
Rail expansion continued until 1920, when there were 938 miles of track in the state.

 Newton, NJ - Sussex Railroad
The Sussex Mine Railroad was chartered on March 9, 1848, for the sole purpose of transporting iron ore between Andover and Waterloo.
The grading completed, the contract for laying the iron rails was awarded in November 1868 to Isaac L. Overton, the contractor and builder of the Episcopal Church in Newton.
Automotive transportation of farm products stole business and passenger service was discontinued due to the fact that a majority of the passengers preferred to use buses, reducing the number of railroad passengers to one or two per day.

Gerstner advocated a horse railway from Linz to Joachimsmuhle, but left the project in the hands of his son, who in September, 1824, was granted by the Emperor Franz I the exclusive right of building a wood and iron road between Mauthausen, on the Danube, and Budweis (now called Ceske-Budejovice).
It was built to a gauge of 3 ft. 7-1/2 in., and had a ruling gradient of 1 in 120.

The charter was amended April 20th, 1837, so as to increase the capital stock $1,000,000, and authorized the directors to borrow to the amount of $400,000 for the completion of the road, and to secure the loan by a mortgage upon the property and stock of the company.
On July 3, 1854, he wrote a letter to the Directors, resigning his office, calling attention to the condition of the books, saying that much would be found there wrong, and excusing his brother (his partner) of all blame.
