  Art-Toward-Architecture
As a point of departure, for studying mural painting and its relation to architecture, I have chosen Renaissance Italy of the 14th century particularly because it was in Italy that a synthesis developed between painting and architecture.
Apropos of this architectural preoccupation, Miss Dudley asked Matisse about Puvis de Chauvannes, who had been largely responsible for the modern theory and practice of "keeping the wall flat" in mural painting, a departure from the Renaissance-Baroque tradition of breaking the wall surface by means of illusionistic perspective and lighting.
All elements in architecture are composed of vertical and horizontal movements, i.e., steel mullion and glass, door frames, doors, cabinets, bricks, lights, etc. the problem in composition here is to relate the enclosure to the painting while at the same time retaining the distinctive individuality of the canvas.

 Whewell and Ruskin on Gothic
Becher (4-8) briefly discusses the scientific nature of Whewell's architectural writings and their relationship to his views on other subjects; Schaffer (215-17) sketches the religious and political interests that these architectural writings were meant to serve.
Since the three editions of Whewell's major architectural work, Architectural Notes on German Churches, appeared in 1830, 1835, and 1842, a celebration of Whewell's place in the science and culture of the 1830s, a crucial decade for the Gothic Revival, presents an opportune moment for pursuing this aspect of his thought in greater detail.
For Ruskin, the "corruption" of Gothic architecture was connected to "the peculiar degradation of the Romanist superstition, and of public morality in consequence" (9:44).

 Ancient Roman Architecture - Crystalinks
Roman architecture represents a fusion of traditional Greek and Etruscan elements, notably the trabeated orders, with new structural principles based on the development of the arch and of a new building material, concrete.
The Romans achieved originality in building very late in their existence; for the whole of the republican period, Roman architecture was a nearly exact copy of that of Greece, aside from the Etruscan contribution of the arch, and its later three-dimensional counterpart, the dome.
In smaller-scale architecture, concrete's strength freed the floor plan from rectangular cells to a more free-flowing environment. On return from campaigns in Greece, the general Sulla returned with what is probably the most well-known element of the early imperial period: the mosaic, a decoration of colorful chips of stone inset into cement.
