Beginning about 1855, Barbizon art and his own rather frenetic search for a more exciting coalition of artistic form and natural fact gradually led him to a style of painting that has earned him the reputation as America's most important landscapist of the second half of the nineteenth century.
His minimal art training consisted of time spent with an itinerant artist, John Jesse Barker (who had studied with Thomas Sully), and a year's apprenticeship to a map engraver.
Although he claimed that his concentration was limited by his "fearful nervous disease"—epilepsy—by 1860 he was considered "a man of unquestionable genius." At the outbreak of the Civil War, lacking the good health to enlist, he offered bounties to those who did and painted uplifting allegorical landscapes.

Michallon re-energized the art of landscape painting, avoiding the repetitiveness of Dunouy, Bidauld and Bertin, and soon established his own circle of admiring artists, of whom the most eminent was the young Camille Corot [1796-1875].
In 1975 he received the Honorary Degree of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida, Tampa, and, together with James Rosenquist, became involved in appealing for a re-examination of taxation for non-profitmaking art institutions.
Their son, known as Jan Vermeer I [1601 – Feb 1670], was an art dealer, distiller and tobacco merchant; he is also said to have been a landscape painter, but this activity is not well documented.

His interest in anatomy and its studies continued all his life and proved to be important not only to his art but also a new contribution to science.
He is said to have gone with no enthusiasm for Italian art, but with a desire to confirm his view that nature, not art, was the only source of inspiration and improvement.
