" Religion in Early American Literature (1600-1855)"
The literature still delivered a moral, but more and more, it was left to the reader to supply his or her own moral from the material the author offered.
The lessons of the literature are clear: 1) Morton was an immoral man (haughty, individualistic, drunk); 2) the colony did their best to correct him; 3) such correction was to no avail so he was separated from the colony.
In American literature, authors were much more comfortable in passing by the first and most convenient answer, in investigating the possibilities, in challenging absolute authority, and in allowing for the inescapable vicissitudes of human nature.

The first, quite a minor one, the blending of finished music with sing-song and Red Indian folklore, was undertaken by a considerable poet and a fine scholar, Longfellow.
If I speak of it as an experiment, perhaps you will think that I am implying a profanation, a desecration, and a blasphemy, since, when we speak of experiments in literature, we generally think of unsuccessful ones.
For example, when we speak of experimental literature, well, we think of works that we do our best to admire and that somehow defeat us (for example, Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, may I add the ninety-odd Cantos of Ezra Pound?) because, after all, the word "experiment" is a polite word.

Whitman published the first edition of "Leaves" in 1855, and continued to revise and expand the book until it had grown into the monumental final version.
The "deathbed" edition may be too large and intimidating a literary tapestry for Whitman "virgins"; the reprinted 1855 edition may thus be a good way to begin exploring the bounteous poetic talent and vision of this giant.
While the 1855 "Leaves" is missing vast sections of the deathbed version, it is still a stunning work of art that succeeds as a self-sufficient piece of literature and philosophy.

eMedicine - Metatarsal Stress Fracture : Article Excerpt by Andrew D Perron
First described by Aristotle in 200 BC, stress fractures were initially recorded in the medical literature in 1855 by the Prussian military physician Breithaupt, who described what is now known as a "march fracture" (stress fracture of the metatarsals).
The incidence of stress fracture in the general population is unknown, as virtually all literature on the subject is derived from a military population or advanced-level athletes.
Stress fractures are estimated to comprise up to 16% of all injuries that are related to athletic participation; running is the cause in most of these.

Classical Mythology in American Life and Literature to 1855
Their annotated bibliographical lists are for teachers and scholars of British and American literature of all periods, and they include a chapter specifically for classical scholars.
Accardi's chapter on American literature up to 1900 includes listings of works on mythology in Bradstreet, Cooper, Charles Brockden Brown, Poe, Emerson, Thoreau, Holmes, Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson, and Whitman--within the period we are dealing with today, as well as works on mythology in Wheatley and Fuller.
Returning now to the theme of this paper--the democratization of classical mythology in America to 1855, I am using here the older definition of mythology which I believe is still the popular one, a traditional body of knowledge about old stories, and the stories to which I refer are those of Greece and Rome.

UPNE - Reading Houses and Building Books: Adam Sweeting
But as Adam Sweeting suggests in this elegantly written, illustrated account, Downing's real legacy lies in the philosophical statement he created by melding the literary and building arts with an intensely moralistic outlook.
Along with such contemporaries as William Cullen Bryant, Washington Irving, and Frederick Law Olmsted, Downing pursued what Sweeting calls genteel romanticism, an ideal that viewed the confluence of polite literature and graceful dwellings as not just an aesthetic statement, but an ethical imperative.
This study of a unique coalescence of literature, architecture, and gardening illuminates "the widely held belief that efforts to reform the world began at home, that beautiful and clean houses produced morally beautiful and spiritually clean people."

Ken Roemer -- Nineteenth-Century American Literature
The focus of this course is conventional; the angle of vision is not.
It is conventional, since we will be concentrating on an era in 19th-century American literature (1850-1855) and five authors (Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Hawthorne, and Melville) often depicted as the most important era in American literature and the most revered authors.
The use of the Web site, examinations of the canon discussion, and the pairings will help to raise questions about: (1) the literary, cultural, historical, and emotional values of the lesser-known works; (2) new ways to perceive literary "classics"; (3) literary criteria; and (4) aesthetic, ethical, ideological, and institutional implications of changing American literary canons.
