The art of the Romanesque period was characterized by an important revival of monumental forms, notably sculpture and fresco painting, which developed in close association with architectural decoration and exhibited a forceful and often severely structural quality.
In the mid-19th cent., art history was raised to the status of an academic discipline by the Swiss Jacob Burckhardt, who related art to its cultural environment, and the German idealists Alois Riegl, Heinrich Wölfflin, and Wilhelm Worringer.
The art of the Sumerian civilization, as revealed by excavations at Ur, Babylon, Uruk (Erech), Mari, Kish, and Lagash, among other cities, was one of enormous power and originality that influenced all of the major cultures of ancient western Asia.

(1856), English art critic and mountaineer, son of the Rev. William Conway, afterwards canon of Westminster, was born at Rochester, and was educated at Repton and at Trinity College, Cambridge.
He became interested in early printing and engraving, and 111 1880 made a tour of the principal libraries of Europe in pursuit of his studies, the result appearing in 1884 as a History of the Woodcutters of the Netherlands in the Fifteenth Century.
From 1884 to 1887 he was professor of art at University College, Liverpool; and in 1901-1904 he was Slade professor of the fine arts at Cambridge.

His painting (Southampton Art Gallery), a characteristic re-interpretation of Pre-Raphaelitism in terms of a lush academic idiom that owed much to Leighton, was based on one of a series of illustrations to the play which he made for the 'International Shakespeare', an ambitious project undertaken by the prolific late Vicorian publishers, Cassel's.
Some time late in 1856 or early in 1857, Rossetti was approached by Augustus A. Ruxton, a handsome young American officer with an interest in the arts, and asked to organise an exhibition which would give American audiences their first real experience of the new and revolutionary school.

From about 1475, Verrocchio’s workshop in Florence became a kind of academy of arts: a number of important painters were trained there: Lorenzo di Credi, Pietro Perugino [1447 – March 1523], Luca Signorelli [1441 – 16 Oct 1523], and Leonardo da Vinci [1452 – 02 May 1519] are the most famous of them.
He was born in Florence and, according to tradition, was trained in that city as a painter, by Alesso Baldovinetti [14 Oct 1425 – 29 Aug 1499].
He studied at Knud Bergslien’s art school (1879—1881) and at the same time at the Royal School of Design in Christiania, and in 1883 he was a student of Frits Thaulow, who introduced him to plein-air painting.

The Limerick School of Art and Ornamental Design, was founded in July 1852 at a public meeting held in the rooms of the Limerick Institution at 49 George Street Limerick.
Art Exhibitions at the Athenaeum in 1866 and 1883 contained works by Teniers, Baroccio, Crawford, Rembrandt, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Romako, Mackin, Poussin, Constable, Panini, Caracci, Haverty, Bassano, Parmogianni, Canaletto, and William Turner.
The names of generations of art students are recorded in the Athenaeum archives, including those of George F. Hare and John [Sean] Keating both who went on to achieve international recognition.

His taste for the works of Whistler and of Asian masters, and discovery of a close kinship between the two, resulted in a warm friendship with Whistler and the development of an unrivaled collection of his works; this included the Peacock Room from the Leyland house, London, which had Whistler decorations.
The gallery also contains a fine collection of Chinese and Japanese paintings and art objects and a remarkable collection of antique glazed pottery with examples from Egypt, Persia, India, China, Korea, and Japan.
