Michał Drzymała (13 September 1857 in Zdroje near Grodzisk Wielkopolski-25 April 1937 in Grabówka) was a Polish peasant, living in the Greater Poland region (or the Grand Duchy of Poznań) under the Prussian rule.
As already noted, 1857 Revolt consisted both of rebellion by the sepoys or soldiers and reaction from sections of the general Indian population.
Writing in 1857 itself, he commented that the British in creating a native army had simultaneously organized the "first general centre of resistance which the Indian people was ever possessed of." He also noted that Muslims and Hindus had combined against their common masters by renouncing their mutual antipathies.

In fact, one lesson learned by the British after 1857 was to not enact reforms, but to instead further strengthen social divides in order to maintain their supremacy; and also to appease the gentry, who had been major instigators in the 1857 revolt.
After 1857, Zamindari (regional feudal officials) became more oppressive, the Caste System became more pronounced, and the communal divide between Hindus and Muslims became marked and visible, all due in great part to British efforts to keep Indian society divided.

SCEDC | Fort Tejon Earthquake (1857)
The Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857 was one of the greatest earthquakes ever recorded in the U.S., and left an amazing surface rupture scar over 350 kilometers in length along the San Andreas fault.
The fact that only two lives were lost was primarily due to the the nature of the quake's setting; California in 1857 was sparsely populated, especially in the regions of strongest shaking, and this fact, along with good fortune, kept the loss of life to a minimum.
The theoretical "Cholame" epicenter of the 1857 earthquake is marked with the large red dot -- Fort Tejon is shown by a white "x" on fl -- and that part of the San Andreas fault which exhibited surface rupture during the earthquake is shown in red.

1857 remains a major landmark in the march towards Indian Independence since it convinced the Britishers that India could not be held at leisure and fear of another mutiny continued to haunt the British rulers right till 1947.

SikhSpectrum.com Monthly. The Truth About the Indian Mutiny of 1857
The mutiny at Meerut on May 10, 1857, which later became widespread and developed into a revolt in some parts of the U.P. and neighboring territories, has been called by some writers 'the Indian War of Independence'.
Openly disobeyed and insulted by the mutineers, Emperor Bahadur Shah, in disgust, threatened to abdicate and leave the capital and commit suicide, as is evident from his memoranda August 9, 1857, addressed to the officers of the Army at Delhi.
The exhibition of blood thirstiness in the murder of women and children sent throughout the country a thrill of horror and hatred against the mutinous sepoys and alienated the sympathies of their probable friends.

What happpened in 1857 in India has been variously described by h9storians as the Revolt of 1857, the Sepoy Mutiny, 1857, and the War of Independence.
The last view that it was a War of independence is borne by the fact that it was an attempt to overthrow the Government of the East India Company which was well-estblished in India.
There was certainly favourable background for an uprising in Nagpur as the memories of annexation of the Raj of the Bhosles, confiscation of their jewellery and public auctioning of their palace property were yet fresh in the public mind.

1857 EARTHQUAKE INTENSITIES NEAR LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
The California earthquake of January 9, 1857, was one of the largest earthquakes to have happened in California in historical times (about the last 200 years).
This fact suggests that, were the 1857 earthquake to be repeated today, there would not be extensive damage to low-rise construction in the metropolitan Los Angeles area.
Therefore, it appears that the 1857 earthquake occurred by propagating from the northwesterly creeping segment of the fault southeastward into and through the locked segment.
