		Very important for the study of Midrashic literature are the Vaiquf (gleaning) Shimoni, on the whole Bible, the Yalqu~ Mekhiri, on the Prophets, Psalms, Proverbs and Job, and the Midrash ha-gadhol,2 all of which are of uncertain but late date and preserve earlier material.
		Their literature, with which alone we are here concerned, is largely polemical and to a great extent deals with grammar and exegesis.

	Summary of American literature through the 19th century
		Literature as a profession did not really exist, and such giants of literary genius as Poe and Hawthorne, not to mention Lowell and others, belonged to a generation of poorly paid Bohemians.
		Emerson had but rarely contributed to periodical literature; but in 1857 a group of his friends - Longfellow, Lowell, Holmes - arranged in his parlor for the publication of the Atlantic Monthly, Lowell being editor.
		His contribution was in the form of a serial, "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table." The series was renewed, in 1859, in "The Professor," and continued, in 1873, as "The Poet at the Breakfast Table." Novels and books of verse appeared during these years.

		Before the end of 1857 McGee was elected to the legislature and the weight of his political duties led to the demise of the paper, but for its short life, it was a remarkable publication.
		In addition to expressing his expectations of Canadian literature and culture generally, and the obstacles in the way of those expectations, McGee had positive suggestions to make about what needed to be done to fulfill them.
		McGee's survey also emphasizes the importance of "newspaper literature" in that it formed the largest segment of reading matter in the provinces and was enormously important in shaping the life of Canada.

		Two older guides to the printed works of English Renaissance authors are Lowndes's Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature (new ed., 1857-64) and the various volumes of "collections and notes" by W. Carew Hazlitt (1867-1903); most of these are conveniently indexed by G. Gray, 1893).
		A similar older guide is Allibone's Critical Dictionary of English Literature and British and American Authors (1958-71, 1891).
