As in other literatures, these popular elements form the foundation on which greater works are gradually built, and it is one function of literary criticism to show the way in which the component parts were welded into a uniform whole.
Very important for the study of Midrashic literature are the Vaiquf (gleaning) Shimoni, on the whole Bible, the Yalqu~ Mekhiri, on the Prophets, Psalms, Proverbs and Job, and the Midrash ha-gadhol,2 all of which are of uncertain but late date and preserve earlier material.
Their literature, with which alone we are here concerned, is largely polemical and to a great extent deals with grammar and exegesis.

 Literature
Virginia is producing at last a literature both indigenous to its soil and imbuied with a realism that may be said to capture the major portion of the truth about its people and its civilization.
The Reconstruction literature of Virginia, however, which endured well into the twentieth century, was characterized by a nostalgia for the past and a romantic idealism that evaded facts.
Literature sustained a loss in 18o8 when John Daly Burk, a gallant young Irishman, was killed in a duel ten years after his coming to Virginia.

Chapters On Jewish Literature - by Israel Abrahams [Authorama]
Jews sought solace in their existing literature rather than in new productions, and the Bible and the oral traditions that were to crystallize a century later into the Mishnah filled the national heart and mind.
Karaism itself gave birth to an original and splendid literature, and, on the other hand, coming as it did at the time when Arabic science and poetry were attaining their golden zenith, Karaism aroused within the Rabbinite sphere a notable energy, which resulted in some of the best work of medieval Jews.

Literature, the old territory; but within it, a shift from the close reading of individual texts to the construction of abstract models.
The models are drawn from three disciplines—quantitative history, geography and evolutionary theory: graphs, maps and trees—with which literary criticism has had little or no interaction; but which have many things to teach us, and may change the way we work.

While a true Russian literature began with Pushkin (1799–1837), its national music was born shortly thereafter with Glinka (1804–1857).
Throughout this era (and thereafter), Russian literature was the common ground on which the nation's composers communicated with their audience.
Composers had a passionate desire for their music to actively engage Russia's political and civic life — and literature was the entry point.

Summary of American literature through the 19th century
Literature as a profession did not really exist, and such giants of literary genius as Poe and Hawthorne, not to mention Lowell and others, belonged to a generation of poorly paid Bohemians.
Emerson had but rarely contributed to periodical literature; but in 1857 a group of his friends - Longfellow, Lowell, Holmes - arranged in his parlor for the publication of the Atlantic Monthly, Lowell being editor.
His contribution was in the form of a serial, "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table." The series was renewed, in 1859, in "The Professor," and continued, in 1873, as "The Poet at the Breakfast Table." Novels and books of verse appeared during these years.

Before the end of 1857 McGee was elected to the legislature and the weight of his political duties led to the demise of the paper, but for its short life, it was a remarkable publication.
In addition to expressing his expectations of Canadian literature and culture generally, and the obstacles in the way of those expectations, McGee had positive suggestions to make about what needed to be done to fulfill them.
McGee's survey also emphasizes the importance of "newspaper literature" in that it formed the largest segment of reading matter in the provinces and was enormously important in shaping the life of Canada.

From a study of Canadian periodicals Brown concludes that there was a distinct link between, one the one hand, the prevalence in Victorian Canada of muscular Christianity and an emphasis on sport and, on the other, the works of Kingsley as well as of Thomas Hughes.
From a thorough examination of earlier children’s literature, Redmond argues that the presentation of the notion of muscular Christianity in the novels of Kingsley and Hughes is the culmination of a trend that began in the eighteenth century.
