Basdeo - INDIANS IN CANADA 1900-1914   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
From 1858 onwards Canada's Pacific coast was first exposed to Chinese immigrants who had come to the area via San Francisco, California, at the height of the Fraser River gold rush.
Canada's policy towards India was considered highly irregular for how could Chinese and Japanese be allowed to enter the Dominion while Indian subjects of the British Empire could not.
As was the case in South Africa and Australia, the entry of Indians in Canada was seen as a challenge to Anglo-Saxon cultural homogeneity of the society, a challenge to British Columbia's white racial destiny and a threat to the economic and social status quo.

 Cricket in Canada
In Victoria, the gold rush of 1858 had brought thousands of American miners up from San Francisco and beyond, and although early in the 1860s the American sport of baseball was introduced to Victoria, cricket remained an important and socially respectable pass-time.
Canada, through geography, trade, and a large component of shared culture, has long had a very involved relationship with the United States, and thus, it is no surprise that baseball quickly gained popularity and soon usurped cricket.
National geography, an assertion of identity, and the introduction of American baseball into Canada are all factors which have played a role in the overall lack of fire behind the spread and enjoyment of cricket in the country.

The larger portrait of George V’s coins mandated that the legend CANADA be moved to the cent’s reverse, and this slightly modified design was prepared by W. Blakemore.

The first Canadian decimal coins were issued in 1858 - 1, 5, 10, and 20 cents - in the name of the Province of Canada (Upper and Lower Canada, or the provinces of Ontario and Quebec as we know them today).
When Canada's dominion coin issue of 1870 was introduced, the 1858 provincial issue of a decimal 20 cent piece was abandoned in favor of a quasi-decimal 25 cent piece.
