		Modern architecture covers the period included in the reigns of William IV (A.D. 1830-37), Victoria (A.D. 1837-1901), Edward VII (A.D. 1901-10), and of our present King, George V. The wonderful nineteenth century surpassed all its predecessors in the variety of its discoveries and in the extent of their application to the needs of daily life.
		The architecture of this period, as might be expected, provides as fascinating a study as do any other developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but is, moreover, so near to us in time as to make it difficult to form a detached judgment of its character.
		In previous periods of architecture we have shown the varying and progressive results which arose under the operation of the geographical, geological, climatic, religious, social, and historical influences, but from the beginning of the nineteenth century the operation of these influences becomes modified.

		Strickland, an outstanding exponent of the Greek Revival in America acquired his architectural training under the renowned Benjamin Latrobe In 1836 Strickland had been one of the organizers and the first president of the American Institution of Architects, the organization which anticipated the later founding (1857) of the American Institute of Architects.
		"The architecture of the building consists of a Doric basement, four Ionic porticoes, two of eight and two of six columns four feet in diameter, surmounted by a Corinthian tower in the center of the roof, the whole height of which is to be 170 feet from the summit of the site.
		The future architecture of the Tennessee Valley is indicated by the city of Norris, where a new standard for rural existence is being set.

	Architecture
		The terms which we often use to describe "colonial architecture" such as: "Salt Box", "Cape Cod", and "2 story Colonial" and which we see in real estate ads are not house styles but, refer to the shape of the body of the building.
		In fact, the range of our architecture is broad, of many styles and periods, eclectic, and as several owners lived in the same house, maintained and "updated" it, many changes over the years on a given house have enhanced the appearance of the house and maintained the integrity of the original style or did not.
		This is an overview with a focus on the old styles in the center of town and in the farm architecture throughout town.

	Religious Architecture
		That a sophisticated taste in architecture was present early in Charleston was illustrated by the second St. Philip's Church, built in 1710-23.
		Mills' first major contribution to Charleston architecture was the design of the Circular Congregational Church, built in 1804-06, which was the first Pantheon-like church in America.
		The style was derived from earlier medieval church architecture, before the rise of the Gothic, and is distinguished from the latter mainly in the use of round, rather than pointed, arches.

		So much Victorian commercial architecture survives on Main Street that it looks much like it did 100 years ago; this area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
		Romanesque Revival in the manner of H. Richardson (1838 - 1886) is the style of a number of Northampton buildings, most notably the Hampshire County Court House, built in 1885-87 in the center of town, and the Forbes Library (1895) on West Street.
		The important Boston architectural firm of Peabody and Stearns designed the gothic-inspired First Church of Christ (1878) at 129 Main Street, and also College Hall (1875) and Alumnae Gymnasium (1890) of Smith College.

	Historical Plaques of Toronto
