 Horse Trams on Rail and Road
The rails were of a 'T' section laid level with the road surface on longitudinal wooden sleepers, with the web of the rail recessed into the timber.
The cars were fitted with a fifth wheel which had a centre flange and which would engage with the grooved rail and thus steer the car keeping the running wheels on the rails.
The patent also shows an alternative method of operation whereby the guide wheel was held to the rail by its own weight and was connected to a foot pedal by a chain instead of levers, the driver pressing the pedal to raise the guide wheel which could then be latched in the up position.

Before the Civil War, rail traffic from New York and New England came through New Jersey on the (Perth) Amboy and Camden RR, stopped, and had to take the ferry over the Delaware to the foot of Prime/Washington Avenue.
For example, in 1859 John Brown's body was brought north on the PWB railroad, precipitating a pro-Southern riot at the Broad and Prime Station.
During the Civil War itself, the PWB railroad was a major military transport, carrying military supplies and troops to the battles, and bringing the many wounded troops back home for treatment.
