In this competition I have concentrated on French art from 1860 to 1940.
This was a period when Paris was truly the centre of the international art world, and most of the most influential new movements and developments originated there.
By the end of the 1920s there was a reaction against this sobriety, and a new generation of artists sought to introduce poetry and unpredictability into their work.

English Art 1860-1914: Modernities and Identities   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
England in the period was a highly modernized society, but the art it produced is not "modernist" in the sense that the word has been used to describe advanced French art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
This book is the first to seek to break the association of "modern" art in England with French models and to describe anew the relationship between English art, England's artists, and their modern culture.
By identifying an array of responses to modern life and experience, the essays inaugurate a revisionist view of the period and reveal that modern English artists and art were profoundly involved with questions about the relationship between artistic tradition and the circumstances and subjects of modern life and modern art practice.

Mark borgh1 Fine Art Inc - American Art - Elizabeth Nourse (1860-1938)
In 1874 at the young age of fifteen, Elizabeth began art studies at the McMicken School of Design, which later became the Art Academy of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Nourse employed bold confident brush strokes and a strong sense of color and light that was derived from her training in Cincinnati, where Munich trained Duveneck had introduced “a taste for both picturesque subject matter and rapid painterly style.” She often set her subjects against a rich contrasting background to further highlight the central theme.
She was also a member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, 1901; Paris American Woman’s Art Association; National Association of Woman Painters and Sculptors, (hon.) and others.

Georgia O'Keeffe and the Calla Lily in American Art, 1860-1940
Supporting an exhibition documenting the use of the calla lily as a subject in American art between 1860 and 1940, this catalog showcases O'Keeffe's engagement with this provocative flower.
Not surprisingly, this is the first major examination of the calla lily as a subject in American art and makes a serious effort to define the popular appeal of the plant and to chart its various meanings over an 80-year period.
The book contains a brief introduction by Lynes (curator, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum) and two relatively short but useful essays by Eldredge (Univ. of Kansas) on the introduction of the calla lily to the US and its changing symbolism, and by Moore (director, Albuquerque Museum) on O'Keeffe's calla lily paintings and their commercial context.
