  Mathematics and Architecture
Historically, architecture was part of mathematics, and in many periods of the past, the two disciplines were indistinguishable.
Architecture was modelled on the teachings of Vitruvius and on the classical architecture which was still plentiful, particularly in Greece and Italy.
Architecture was another of his specialities and he learnt about it, in particular the mathematical principles behind it, from studying Alberti's texts.

 VLN: S.F. Architecture 1861-1866
Originally built in 1861 but remodeled extensively after the fire, Gump's Gallery is the oldest continuously operating gallery in northern California.
Built in 1861, it was "modernized" in the 1870s to typify what has come to be identified as the classic San Francisco Victorian Italianate style.
Today, beautifully maintained and embowered by lush foliage, the Cary and Spring Houses are among the most delightful of the city's old residences (Olmsted and Watkins 1969: 46).

 Religious Architecture
That a sophisticated taste in architecture was present early in Charleston was illustrated by the second St. Philip's Church, built in 1710-23.
Mills' first major contribution to Charleston architecture was the design of the Circular Congregational Church, built in 1804-06, which was the first Pantheon-like church in America.
The style was derived from earlier medieval church architecture, before the rise of the Gothic, and is distinguished from the latter mainly in the use of round, rather than pointed, arches.

On 1861 William Morris it founds London, with a group of artists and architects, the society "Morris and Co." destined to the construction and manufacture of artistic objects and current use but.
This society was the departure point of an ambitious movement of intention but that later culminated 27 years with the construction, by C.R. Ashbee, of the "Arts and Society" (Society of Arts and Offices).
From the spirit who contributes "Society of Arts and Offices" derives a new type of architecture, the modernism, supported in its decorative sense of the construction, that breaks the aesthetic one of century XIX, changing totally the own art of the same one.

REVIVALS IN NINETEENTH CENTURY ARCHITECTURE: Successive and simultaneous revivals of historical styles are symptomatic of a desire for a stable and continuing tradition in the midst of the revolutionary changes of the industrial age.
Richardson's Romanesque vocabulary was generally consistent with his basic principles of architectural planning: aggregation of simple units and emphasis on the massiveness of construction in stone.
All architecture throughout history had been constrained by local conditions: local building materials, local workmen and their traditions, local taste, specifics of the local climate (hot or cold, dusty or damp, daytime and nighttime), local architectural iconography.

So much Victorian commercial architecture survives on Main Street that it looks much like it did 100 years ago; this area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Romanesque Revival in the manner of H. Richardson (1838 - 1886) is the style of a number of Northampton buildings, most notably the Hampshire County Court House, built in 1885-87 in the center of town, and the Forbes Library (1895) on West Street.
The important Boston architectural firm of Peabody and Stearns designed the gothic-inspired First Church of Christ (1878) at 129 Main Street, and also College Hall (1875) and Alumnae Gymnasium (1890) of Smith College.

Woodland Terrace was designed by Samuel Sloan and built in 1861 by Charles M. Leslie, a speculative builder.
Sloan was a major figure in American architecture and is remembered chiefly for his many hospitals, asylums, and Philadelphia schools, but is perhaps most widely known as the designer of "Longwood," an octagonal "folly" in Natchez, Mississippi.
Sloan edited the Architectural Review and Builders' Journal and wrote several builders guides, among them Homestead Architecture (1861) and The Model Architect (1866).
