1862 Apollo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is named after the Greek god Apollo.
On November 4, 2005, it was announced that an asteroid moon, or satellite of Apollo has been detected by radar observations from Arecibo Observatory, Puerto Rico, 29 October–2 November 2005.
The satellite is just 80 m across and orbits Apollo closely, in an orbit a mere 3 km in radius [2].

Apollo was studied extensively during its close approach in 1980, when CW and coarse-resolution ranging echoes were detected at Arecibo by Ostro et al.
Apollo is a rapid rotator with a period of about 3 h.
Apollo was discovered so long ago (1932) that its discovery announcement is not available in electronic form.

Apollos 7 and 9 were Earth orbiting missions to test the Command and Lunar Modules, and did not return lunar data.
Apollos 8 and 10 tested various components while orbiting the Moon, and returned photography of the lunar surface.
Apollo hardware was used to build and operate the first American space station, Skylab, from 1973 to 1974.

 BINARY NEAR-EARTH ASTEROIDS
Similarly, Apollo was observed by radar in 1980 but its satellite was not detected until 2005.
Consequently, radar observations did not yield detections of secondaries are excluded from this list (e.g., 1990 OS and Didymos at Goldstone in 2003 and Apollo at Goldstone in 2005).
With 2006 GY2, there was a suggestion of a satellite in Goldstone CW data on May 13, but it wasn't obviously a binary until we did radar imaging at Arecibo on May 15.

Apollo asteroid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Apollo asteroids are a group of near-Earth asteroids named after 1862 Apollo, the first asteroid of this group to be discovered.
Some can get very close to the Earth, making them a potential threat to our planet (the closer their semi-major axis is to Earth's, the less eccentricity is needed for the orbits to cross).
The largest known Apollo asteroid is 1866 Sisyphus, with a diameter of about 10 km, approximately the size of the object which created the Chicxulub crater whose impact is presumed to have led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Although initially there were concerns that this asteroid might possibly impact Earth later this century and thus merit special monitoring, further analysis of its orbit has since ruled out any such collision, at least in the foreseeable future.
Asteroid 2004 XP14 is a member of a class of asteroids known as Apollo, which have Earth-crossing orbits.
The name comes from 1862 Apollo, the first asteroid of this group to be discovered.

Apollo crosses the orbits of Mars, Earth and Venus (not shown).

 Apollo group
Also known as Earth-crossing asteroids, one of three groups of near-Earth asteroids; they have semimajor axes greater than 1.0 AU and perihelia less than 1.017 AU (Earth’s aphelion distance).
Some Apollo objects can approach closer than Mercury to the Sun, the record-holder being 1995CR with a perihelion distance of 0.12 AU.
Other notable members of the group include (1862) Apollo (the prototype), (1866) Sisyphus (the largest, with a diameter of about 8 km), (3200) Phaethon, (1685) Toro, and (4179) Toutatis.

The first of these to be discovered were the Apollo asteroids, 1862 Apollo being detected by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth in 1932 but lost shortly thereafter and not rediscovered until 1978.
Apollo asteroids have semi major axes (a) that are greater than or equal to 1 AU and perihelion distances that are less than or equal to 1.017 AU; thus, they cross the Earth's orbit when near the perihelia of their orbits.
For example, in January 1991, an Apollo asteroid with an estimated diameter of 10 meters passed by the Earth within less than half the distance to the Moon.

When Dick met Dr. Helin, he “talked shop” with her, and gave her a copy of the autobiographical notes he had prepared for the presentation to the WCAC and the GLPA meeting in Cleveland a couple years ago.
In those notes, he told the story of how an article he saw about the recently (at the time) discovered asteroid (1862) Apollo — the prototype of a group of Earth-crossing asteroids, fueled his interest in astronomy.
Well, Dr. Helin has discovered a basket-full of asteroids, and she decided to propose that one of them be named for Dick Emmons.
