	Photography as Art
		In 1862 French artists proclaimed that photography, ""never result[ed] in works which couldever be compared with those works which are the fruits of intelligence and the study of art.’" (London/Upton, Photography, 360) A German newspaper proclaimed it ""blasphemy.’" (Davis, Fine Art, 10) People did not generally dislike photography but its early artistic aspirations were discouraged.
		Alfred Stieglitz said, "It is not art in the professionalized sense about which I care, but that which is created sacredly, as a result of a deep inner experience, with all of oneself, and that becomes 'art' in time." (photoquotes.com) Photography is an extremely evocative medium.
		Their art was important in promoting themes and stories for the Church and in immortalizing prominent figures of the day such as the Medici's.

		For someone that held so much influence and power over artists and the art scene in Paris, these overt displays of affection (whether from the artist or the patrons commissioning it) were as much about fear as it was about friendship.
		Philippe Burty, a close friend of the artist, was one of the more progressive art critics of his era; he was a particularly strong early supporter of the Impressionists.
		His many articles in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts (for which he was an art critic from 1859), La République Française, and other journals directed attention to innovations and new developments in the fine and decorative arts.

		I'm going to start with some earlier works, and hopefully, as this topic grows longer, we will be able to compare his paintings, appreciate their versatility, but also his progress as an artist.
		Though Klimt was highly successful early in his career as a painter of sumptuous decorative schemes, he was drawn to avant-garde art, and this wall painting clearly shows the influence that Impressionism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau had on him.

	Paul Cezanne - Biography and Art Prints.
		In 1862 the artist traveled to Paris, enrolling in the Atelier Suisse where he painted alongside Pissaro, Renoir, Sisley and Degas.
		He believed art should be "a harmony which runs parallel with nature." Cezanne sought to reduce nature to three shapes: the cylinder, cone and sphere, rendering these shapes in skillfully modeled patches of color.
		An extensive retrospective of the artist's work was exhibited in 1996 at the Grand Palais, Paris, the Tate Gallery, London, and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
