 History of geology--GSC
The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) was established by the Province of Canada in 1841 and actually began in 1842, when William Edmond Logan was appointed as director.
The GSC was in the vanguard of mapping and assessing the new lands of Canada.
As the Geological Survey of Canada continues to accept new responsibilities and to develop new areas of expertise, its contribution to the next 150 years of Canada's development should be as important, colorful, and exciting as in the past.

BOOK - Johan Schroder's Travels in Canada, 1863. Edited, Translated and with an Introduction by Orm Overland.
This book is the Narrative of two months of travel during the summer of 1863 that took the author, a Norwegian gentleman and farmer, through Upper and Lower Canada.
Norwegian shipowners, many of whom were acting as carriers for the timber industry, quickly discovered that their return voyages to Canada could be more profitable if their ships were filled with immigrants instead of ballast.
Schroders account of Canada, which is now published for the first time in English, is the only narrative of travel in Upper and Lower Canada by a Scandinavian and one of the very few descriptions of pre-Confederation Canada written by a traveller from outside the English speaking world.

"Canada has two emblems which have often appeared to some to point out its position in these respects,--the Beaver and the Maple.
The beaver in his sagacity, his industry, his ingenuity, and his perseverance, is a most respectable animal; a much better emblem for our country than the rapacious eagle or even the lordly lion; but he is also a type of unvarying instincts and old-world traditions.

Roll of Regiments of British North America in 1866
The Dominion of Canada was formed on 29 March 1867, federating the Province of Canada (and dividing it into the new Provinces of Quebec and Ontario), and New Brunwick and Nova Scotia, and bringing all under the control and organisation of the Canadian Militia Acts.
While many regiments stretch their unofficial lineages through the county Sedentary Militia to the 18th century, the government of Canada does not officially recognise any continuity before the Militia Act of 1855 which established an Active Militia in independent companies.
While the 1860 numbering was in order of precedence within the Province of Canada (Quebec and Ontario in one sequence), gaps in the numbering soon occurred, and these vacant numbers were later sometimes filled by junior regiments from any of the ten provinces.
