 Piotr Tchaikovsky
At the end of the year he was contacted by a wealthy widow, Nadezhda von Meck, who admired his music and was eager to give him financial security; they corresponded intimately for 14 years but never met.
It was a disaster: he escaped from her almost at once, in a state of nervous collapse, attempted suicide and went abroad.
He resigned from the conservatory and, tortured by his sexuality, could produce no music of real emotional force (the Piano Trio, written on Rubinstein's death, is a single exception).

His parting from his mother was painful; further, she died when he was 14 - an event that may have stimulated him to compose.
In 1863 he entered the Conservatory, also undertaking private teaching.
Little of his music so far had pleased the conservative musical establishment or the more nationalist group, but his First Symphony had a good public reception when heard in Moscow in 1868.

 Essentials of Music - Composers
Brahms is an important figure in German music, standing almost as a rock of classicism in the onrushing stream of the new styles created by Wagner, Liszt and others.
His music is unshakably absolute, never drawing on extramusical images or ideas.
His study of the music of earlier composers, including those of the Renaissance, added to the more conservative elements of his music.

During the first half of the 1800s, one of the things that helped slaves survive such terrible conditions was music.
Using land, culture and their daily life as inspiration, slaves would sing, dance and play the banjo, fiddle and drum while they worked -- all of which was forbidden by their owners.
After the slaves were emancipated, or freed, in 1863, slave music eventually led to the birth of what we know as American music.

The heartbroken clergyman wrote a long poem about Ella but changed her name to "Lorena," an adaptation of "Lenore" from Edgar Allan Poe's macabre poem, "The Raven." Webster's friend, Joseph Philbrick Webster (no relation), wrote the music, and the song was first published in Chicago in 1857.

This song, "Rock me to sleep mother: A brilliant study for the Piano" by Charles Nordendorf, probably a teacher at the Danville Female College, was dedicated to a Miss Fannie Sutherlin of the same college.

I have included links to the music of the original Civil War version and to the Irish folk song, from which Patrick Gilmore said he derived his song.
Gilmore, a musical soloist in his own right, came from Ireland in 1848, carrying ideas about instrumentation and interpretation from the European bands.
With his "new" ideas and a penchant for showmanship, he soon redefined the course of American band music for all time to come -- even Sousa's success hinged on the work that Gilmore did before him.

Richmond is a Hard Road to Travel
Notes: This parody of Emmett's "Jordan Am a Hard Road to Travel" was composed by an anonymous Confederate sympathizer, probably around 1864.
This is shown by the sheet music -- but also by the fact that the last battle mentioned is Fredericksburg (late 1862).
The verse which refers to McDowell is perhaps somewhat deceptive; McDowell was the first commander of what would later be the Army of the Potomac, and led it to defeat (over his protests) at First Bull Run/Manasses (July 21, 1861).
