Thus Nevada, in the midst of the Civil War, became a state in which 87 percent of its 110,000 square miles was controlled by the federal government.
The entire 6,543-word text of the Nevada constitution was telegraphed to Lincoln on Oct. 17, 1864, at a cost of $4,303.27 -- the longest and most expensive document ever telegraphed in the United States.

In June 1864, while under the command of Captain John Winslow, Kearsarge found CSS Alabama at Cherbourg, France, where she had gone for repairs after a devastating cruise at the expense of the United States' merchant marine.
