The King's South Africa Medal was awarded to all troops who served in South Africa on or after 01 January 1902, and completed 18 months service before 01 June 1902.
Approximately 200 more Canadians would have received this medal because they returned to South Africa for a second tour but due to the long sea voyages, they did not serve the required 18 months and only received the SOUTH AFRICA 1901 and/or the SOUTH AFRICA 1902 bars to their Queen's South Africa Medal.
Those Canadians that did receive the King's South Africa Medal were troops who remained in South Africa and transferred to units (eg LSH to Canadian Scouts or to the South African Constabulary / RCA to 2 Canadian Mounted Rifles or to Canadian Scouts).

A move is afoot to resurrect the old railway line between Okiep and Port Nolloth (91.5 miles) which was erected in 1866 and completed in 1873.
From 1866 to 1890 the only form of pulling power on the railway line were mules and the Namaqualand Mule Train was world famous in its time.
In the 1890's steam was introduced (Clara, the steam engine and some carriages are on static display at the mine museum at Nababeep) and the whole railway line was dismantled in the late 1940's and early 1950's by the Americans.

While Africa is known as the Diamond continent, it is actually in Australia that the largest reserves are to be found - including the very rare and highly valued pink and red fancy colored diamonds.
Diamonds weren't cut until the 14th century and it wasn't until 1725 that deposits were discovered in Brazil and 1866 until South Africa's substantial storehouse was unearthed.
Diamonds are made of pure carbon atoms that exist deep in the ground, exposed to intense heat and pressure over billions of years.
