	Public school - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		This is in contrast to a private school (also known as an "independent school." Here the word "public" is used in the sense of "public library," provided to the public at public expense.
		In Australia and Scotland, public schools are also known as state schools, the name by which they go in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
		Public schools were schools supported by an endowment, with a governing body, available to all members of the public, provided that they could pay for tuition costs.

		Before the widespread establishment of private schools, wealthy planters engaged tutors and invited the children of neighboring plantations to share the instruction and the expense; girls attended with their brothers or were taught by governesses.
		In 1937-38 the expenditure for each Negro pupil in average daily attendance was $26.08 in city schools and $12.19 in rural schools, as against corresponding expenditures of $47.62 and $24.01 for the white pupil.

		Congress passes the Pacific Railroad Act, which authorizes the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Companies to build a transcontinental rail line along the 42nd parallel and provides public lands and subsidies for every mile of track laid.
		Congress passes the Homestead Act, which allows citizens to settle on up to 160 acres of surveyed but unclaimed public land and receive title to it after making improvements and residing there for five years.
		A second Pacific Railroad Act is passed by Congress, one that aims to stimulate investment in the enterprise by doubling the size of the land grants and improving the subsidies offered for every mile of track laid.

		Private schools are usually fee-paying establishments, generally run purely for profit, or may be run by charities which restrict their intake in some way; for example, there are schools for the children of members of various professions, the armed forces, freemasons, various religions and so forth.
		Pupils passing the public school entrance examinations may be allowed entry free of charge or at reduced fees; generally there is felt to be some stigma in being a "scholar".
		Boys leaving public school are almost guaranteed admission to university (if they can afford the fees, or gain a scholarship) and eventually to one of the professions; if they decide to enter the legal profession they skip university, going instead to become pupils at the chambers of a suitably eminent barrister.
