  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Christian Archaeology
Christian archaeology is that branch of the science of archaeology the object of which is the study of ancient Christian monuments.
The principal aim of Christian archaeology, as indicated, is to ascertain all that is possible relative to the manners and customs of the early Christians from the monuments of Christian antiquity.
As a consequence of this difficulty, differences of opinion exist among archaeologists as to the chronological limits to be assigned to Christian archaeology.

As regards archaeology, there was no question of excavations, as they were generally impossible at the time.
We know that this dig could not be completed, and that a later expedition of the British School of Archaeology of Jerusalem, directed by Diana Kirkbride, worked on revising and completing the conclusions (RB 1960, 65-92), and on distinguishing better the different periods between the end of the first century A.D. and the fourth century.
The four superior levels, uncovered in the first fieldtrip, are characterized by the "cornet", a decoration painted in pastel, fanshaped engravings, chisel, and strange wall paintings in poor condition and difficult to interpret.

Considered a second class citizen by some historians and alienated by the purist prehistorian the archaeologist who uses text to assist in analysis and interpretation is tolerated but often misunderstood by both disciplines.
However, a unilateral approach to the understanding of the philosophy of both disciplines of history and archaeology is essential if a reliable typology is to be agreed.
If the research of the mining landscape is to continue as a common interest of the historian and archaeologists alike it must be on the basis of understanding and a marriage of thought, to borrow Sibyl Jack’s analogy (Jack 1993).

A 26-feet (8 metres) diameter pitch-back waterwheel was erected circa 1869, at the lower level of the battery site at the Adelong Falls.
Reports during the construction of the water-wheel housing, as stated, indicate that rock had to be excavated to accommodate the 26-feet diameter waterwheel at the lower end of the battery (Gundagai Times 19 June 1869).

The shawls made by the notable manufacturer Thomas Clabburn of Norwich, were popular with royalty and the nobility; in 1863 one of his shawls, woven in the Danish royal colours, was presented by the city to Princess Alexandra on the occasion of her marriage to the future Edward VII.
And in 1869, a shawl woven by Abel Towler was presented to Queen Victoria’s on her visit to the city.
Shawls in private collections are increasing; by keeping in touch, and exchanging information, collectors and museum researchers can widen their knowledge of this very fascinating subject.

It is obvious that Professor Frend is highly qualified to write a book that attempts 'to outline the growth of interest in Christian archaeology from the Renaissance onwards, describing briefly excavations in the main areas of discovery, and placing these developments within the framework of cultural and religious movement of the day' (from the Introduction).
But we should not assume that the title incorporates the archaeology of the NT; that is another topic which has recently been competently treated by John McRay of Wheaton College in his Archaeology and the New Testament (Baker, 1991).
The last few pages of text raise the question, 'Whither Christian archaeology?' The study is adequately illustrated with plans of some churches, maps, and fl/white and color photographs.

American archaeology as a professional or academic discipline also took time to develop from amateur antiquarians or pure relic seekers (pot-hunters).
This develpoment was compounded by the prejudice toward Native American culture and a bias that actually blinded many early antiquarians from recognizing that the many mounds found in the East were actually components of Native American cultures.
However, in 1960 L. Binford proposed a "New Archaeology" that delved into general laws and cognition that has emerged into what was called processual archaeology; changing to specific cases of the process of cultural change and explanation derived from ecological and cultural factors.

Certainly in Lent most other forms of entertainment were discontinued.
In 1869 the Hereford Times reported of Bromyard that 'it was thought good by our reverend vicar to make just one exception to this general rule when Colonel Beville, just returned from the Abyssinian war was permitted to give a lecture’.
Taking the parish register evidence that infant baptisms consistently exceed burials into account, the factor that limits Bromyard's population must be emigration, a common enough occurrence in small non-industrial towns at the time.
