  Art Centers, Alternative
In the parlance of the contemporary art world, an “alternative space” indicates a gallery or center that by circumstance or mission exists outside of, or in opposition to, mainstream art institutions, particularly museums and commercial galleries.
In 1948 the resistance of the curators of the Art Institute's “Annual Exhibition by Artists of Chicago and Vicinity” to the new vision of artists educated at the School of the Art Institute on the GI Bill spawned the important artists' group Exhibition Momentum.
Fed by a huge increase in art school graduates in the late 1960s and by grants from the newly established National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), N.A.M.E. Gallery (1973–1997) and feminist co-ops Artemisia Gallery (1973–2003) and ARC Gallery (1973) formed the core of an exciting alternative scene on Hubbard Street west of State.

As French society fought for democratic reform, the Realists democratized art by depicting modern subjects drawn from the everyday lives of the working class.
In keeping with Gustave Courbet's statement in 1861 that "painting is an essentially concrete art and can only consist in the representation of real and existing things," Realists recorded in often gritty detail the present-day existence of humble people, paralleling related trends in the naturalist literature of Émile Zola, Honoré de Balzac, and Gustave Flaubert.
Daumier highlighted socioeconomic distinctions in the newly modernized urban environment in a group of paintings executed around 1864 that illustrate the experience of modern rail travel in first-, second-, and third-class train compartments.

The School of Art was founded in 1874, but despite its longevity and international renown, has never been housed in a facility designed expressly for the purpose of teaching and showcasing art and design.
The wiring in the Barracks, as in so many other of the School’s buildings, is inadequate to the tasks it is required to perform, and as a result tripped circuits occur with frequency, posing a risk to the safety of both the building’s inhabitants and equipment.
But more importantly, a new, purpose-built School of Art and Design building will make teaching and learning safer, more comfortable, more convenient, and more collegial for both students and faculty by dramatically enhancing the formal and informal educa-tional opportunities that the School is able to furnish.

NCAW Spring 06 | Charles Stuckey reviews Cezanne and Provence
Moreover, some of the author's other insights remain superficial when she ignores possible non-Provençal factors in order to bolster her case for the hypothetical Provençal overtones, as happens in her discussion of Cézanne's images of his mother and sisters.
Take the odd little double-sided painting now at The Saint Louis Art Museum, one side supposedly a portrait of the artist's sister, Marie, and the other supposedly a likeness of their mother (of whom no photograph exists, to my knowledge).
Cézanne had met the ultra-liberal art critic on one of his trips away from Provence, in November 1894 when he visited with Monet in Giverny.

Dante Rossetti, put off by his father's passionate politics, came to believe that art and literature should pursue beauty for beauty's sake and not try to be moral, instructive, or politically useful.
He studied art and became a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an art group embracing art for art's sake.
Berndtson was also much influenced by the detailed genre and costume paintings of Ernest Meissonier [21 Feb 1815 – 31 Jan 1891], as seen for example in Art Lovers in the Louvre (1879), shown at the Salon of 1879, which reveals his technical skill and accuracy in the treatment of costume and interiors.

The image is one that echoes the art of the middle ages, both in its style, and in its veneration of Mary; something relatively alien to the Protestant world of Victorian England.
