	New Musical Institutions
		Before 1870, French music had already in the Opera and the Opéra-Comique (without counting the various endeavours of the Théâtre Lyrique) an outlet which was nearly enough for the needs of her dramatic productions.
		Even when musical taste was most decadent, the works of Gounod, Ambroise Thomas, and Massé, had always upheld the name of French opéra-comique.
		A new generation was growing up, however,—a generation that was serious and thoughtful, that was more attracted by pure music than by the theatre, that was filled with a burning desire to found a national art.

	Music Cemetery
		The Music Cemetery may well be the first burial ground to serve the early settlers in and around Summitville.
		The earliest legible stones in the Music are incised 1840, one for a son of Zachariah Robertson and another for Ellen Stanley who died March 2 of that year.
		This indicates the very small number of families living near the Music Cemetery in the early 19th century as compared to the number in the early 21st.

		Just as the political events of 1789 determined the course of French music through the late Classical and Romantic periods, the political upheavals of 1870 were to seal off the empty room of French Romanticism, and open a new door in preparation for a true Nationalist.
		This music was appreciated by sophisticated listeners, but it was constructed as an exercise in technical prowess, rather than to deliver a message, or communicate the composers' feelings.
		The new paths taken by French music as well as other arts over the turn of the century were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. Much of France became a battlefield, and the nation was often in despair, fearing that they would be on the losing side.

		This clearly demonstrates that music was a dominant force in the first days of Lebanon Valley College.
		By 1870, the College enrollment stood at 151 students.

		The second of Johann Strauss the elder's sons, Josef, was born in Vienna on 20 August 1827.
		The shy and sensitive Josef Strauss was coerced into deputising for his brother Johann when the latter's doctors prescribed for him a lengthy rest cure in 1853.
		He died in Vienna on 22 July 1870, following a fall from the conductor's podium, and is best remembered today as composer of the waltzes Village Swallows from Austria (1864), The Mysterious Powers of Magnetism (1865) and Music of the Spheres (1868) as well as co-writing the Pizzicato-Polka (1869) with his brother Johann.

	The Trautonium
		The first version, the 'Concert Trautonium' - using Thoraton electric tubes from AEG, was ready in 1936 for Harald Genzmer's " Conzert für Trautonium und Orchester".
		After the war Sala established a workshop for film music production in Berlin where he recorded music for Hitchcock's "the birds" and continues to the present day to compose and record music.
		The essential design principles of the Trautonium were retained in the development of the semi-conductor version of the Mixturtrautonium; sound production on the basis of subharmonic mixture, and the method of playing with two string manuals.
