 Running Head: AESTHETIC FITNESS
As Darwin (1871) realized, bowers are one of the best examples of sexual selection through mate choice, and also one of the only examples of animal art.
If art evolved through sexual selection to serve a courtship function, we are not likely to be consciously aware of that function.
The proper biological function of art (which must concern survival or reproduction somehow) must not be confused with the proximate individual motivations for producing art (which may include making money, inspiring religious devotion, or challenging patriarchy).

It was purchased by a wealthy gentleman of Scotland to be placed on exhibition for one year in the Academy of Fine Arts in Glasgow, Scotland, after which it goes to his private collection of paintings, of which he has a large and valuable collection.
The season of the year, dullness of business and scarcity of money are generally urged as the cause; but we believe our artists are hibernating, and, like the bats, will not unhook themselves until nature puts on her Spring garments and makes herself presentable for their inspection.
Munger's picture of the Shoshone Falls, on exhibition at the Art Association's rooms, is so simply faithful, so natural, and unlike a picture, that a majority of the visitors walk past it with a casual glance, not even pausing before it; and yet, it is one of the best paintings in the gallery.

Vincent worked in the art trade with Goupil and Company for six and a half years in total, although we only have documentation of about four of those years.
Soon afterward, in 1873, Vincent was transferred to London on a promotion, stopping in Paris to visit the art museums there, and Theo took his brother's position in The Hague offices of Goupil.
His interest in art history and literature (particularly Shakespeare) grew, and his informal education led to the formation of rudimentary opinions about the role and value of art.
