African Americans in the Sports Arena
From 1871 to 1947, African American baseball players were locked in and forced to play only those teams made up of "negroes." As the all white baseball teams grew in numbers, right beside them were the developing number of all black teams.
The English version was called "rounders." During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), the American soldiers were known to play "base." The true sport of baseball took root in America around the 1800's.
Doubleday's game of baseball was very similar to the English game of "rounders," nevertheless, the interest which he brought to the area of Cooperstown, New York and baseball made him a recognizable name.

 The Economic History of Baseball
Baseball has been about profits since the first admission fee was charged.  The first professional league, the National Association, founded in 1871, charged a $10 franchise fee.  The latest teams to join MLB, paid $130 million apiece for the privilege in 1998.
The formation of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players in 1871 created a different level of competition for baseball players.  The professional organization, which originally included nine teams, broke away from the National Association of Base Ball Players, which used amateur players.
One important source of the tax advantage of owning a franchise comes from the ability to depreciate player salaries.  In 1935 the IRS ruled that baseball teams could depreciate the value of their player contracts.  This is an anomaly since labor is not a depreciating asset.

In the dark ages of baseball -- meaning the days before ballparks had lights -- forfeits were often the result of losing teams dillying and dallying and delaying in hopes of the game being called because of darkness.
The last forfeit in major-league baseball was a result of just such shenanigans.
