To these may be added Rare Book and Special Collections Library holdings of about 825 Chicago "pre-Fire" (pre-1871) music imprints and over 200 items of sheet music published in Southern states during the years of the Confederacy, as well as a number of campaign songsters and other music-related materials in the History Library's Lincoln Room.
Music can be used to shape public opinion and to maintain morale on the home front.
Designed to appeal to a wide segment of the American populace, many sheet music titles are graced with attractive cover illustrations (some in color); a significant number were produced in response to particular events or reflect current political developments.

There is a diary entry for the 23rd of January 1871 which noted: Hardings, paid Aylward 11th and 12th instalments piano.
There may have been a persistent gene of music in the family, for Edmund's great, great, great, granddaughter in Australia, descended from William Eustace, has an Honours Degree in Music and is a practising music teacher.
So interested in music was Edmund that he used a full page and a half of his diary to write out the words and score notes of a song in Italian.

Sullivan's incidental music to The Merry Wives of Windsor premiered one week short of three years later than Thespis, at the same theater, and commissioned by the same impressario, John Hollinshead.

As part of "Cole and Johnson Brothers," a collaboration that flourished in the first decade of the twentieth century, James Weldon Johnson wrote the lyrics to over two hundred popular songs.
Perhaps the best known of all the Johnson brothers' collaborations was this stirring hymn, often called the "Negro National Anthem." The Thomas Cooper Library holds two early versions of this song.
Johson and his brother Rosamond, who was responsible for the musical arrangements, produced two very successful anthologies of traditional songs in 1925 and 1926.
