	Architecture: The Second Chicago School
		Following the fallow years of World War II, residential architecture in Chicago began to reappear as early as the late 1940s, mostly in the form of apartment towers, while the resumption of commercial building waited until roughly a decade later.
		The origins of the movement are traceable to two powerfully interactive factors: the advent of modernist architecture as a whole in America and the arrival in Chicago of a single, highly influential figure, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
		One of the major pioneers in the development of modernism in Europe, Mies emigrated from his native Germany in 1937 to assume the headship of the School of Architecture at Chicago's Armour Institute of Technology (later Illinois Institute of Technology [IIT]).

		The most historically interesting of its houses is 15-17 Macondray Lane, which dates to at least 1872 but is thought to be older, perhaps having been shipped around the Horn (Olmsted and Watkins 1969: 48).
		Pretty fluting is seen on the lower half of the porch columns and pipestem colonnettes on this Italianate (Olmsted and Watkins 1969: 287).
		Another interesting architectural area in the Western Addition is the south side of Bush Street in the block between Fillmore and Webster.

	VLN: S.F. Architecture 1870-1872
		A cluster of houses from the 1860s and 1870s is at 228 and 224 Filbert and across the way on the two pedestrian lanes, Darrell Place and Napier Lane.
		The tower and walls survived the fire of 1906, with the result that this good example of Victorian Gothic architecture still presents much the same appearance it did in the San Francisco of the mid-nineteenth century (Olmsted and Watkins 1969: 93).
		The deep back garden with its many old and lovely trees has a brown shingled cottage, formerly the servants' quarters and kitchen, from which meals were sent to the main house via a cook's lift through a covered passageway (Olmsted and Watkins 1969: 18-19).

		So much Victorian commercial architecture survives on Main Street that it looks much like it did 100 years ago; this area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
		Romanesque Revival in the manner of H. Richardson (1838 - 1886) is the style of a number of Northampton buildings, most notably the Hampshire County Court House, built in 1885-87 in the center of town, and the Forbes Library (1895) on West Street.
		The important Boston architectural firm of Peabody and Stearns designed the gothic-inspired First Church of Christ (1878) at 129 Main Street, and also College Hall (1875) and Alumnae Gymnasium (1890) of Smith College.

	Chinese Architecture: Hu Xue-yan house, Hangzhou
		Hu originally made his fortune as a banker, but expanded his business to pawnbroker, import-export, real estate, and finally made is biggest fortune as the founder of a Chinese herbal medicine company.
		He built his house in 1872, and it was a huge complex and covers at least a couple of acres.
		Hu’s descendants mortgaged the house and lost it after his death and it passed though a series of owners until the provincial government acquired it, restored it, and turned it into a museum of sorts.
