Art Nouveau literally means new art, a complex and innovative European artistic and design style of the last two decades of the 1800s and the first decade of the 1900s.
Art Nouveau combined inspiration from this source with some of the elements of Arts and Crafts philosophy; it was also highly varied and asymmetrical which reflected the political unease of the period.
Art Nouveau, traces of which are discernible in the art of the Pre-Raphaelites and even in that of the 18th-century visionary poet William Blake, concentrated on the treatment of surface decoration.

 Academic art
Criticism: Academic art was first criticised by Realist artists such as Gustave Courbet, as being based on clichés and representing fantasies and tales of ancient myth while real social concerns were being ignored.
The French referred derisively to the style of academic art as "art pompier" (pompier means fireman) alluding to the paintings of Jacques-Louis David (who was held in esteem by the academy) which often depicted soldiers wearing fireman-like helmets.
This denigration of academic art reached its peak through the writings of art critic Clement Greenberg who stated that all academic art is "kitsch".

Artists of the Monterey Peninsula define the late 19th- and early 20th-century chapter of California's art history, and it was during this period that the Monterey Peninsula attained distinction as the new spiritual heart of California.
Beginning with Jules Tavernier's arrival in 1875, art produced in and around Monterey signaled a break from the tightly rendered and highly detailed style of the Hudson River School, the then-dominant style in California.
