		In the spring, yellow fever cases were high in the Caribbean, in particular in Cuba.
		Such efforts, though they were undertaken to eliminate germs, helped to remove the breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and New Orleans never again experienced the scope of the 1878 epidemic.

		1878 The Nott Memorial of Union College at Schenectady, N.Y., was completed under the direction of architect Edward Tuckerman Potter, grandson of Eliphalet Nott, and a leader in the Victorian Gothic style.
		1878 Theodore Vail left a career position with the U.S. Post Office and was hired to become the first general manager of the Bell Telephone Co. He was able to move the company forward to nationwide service but disappointed the financial backers.

		The preceding is the latest example (apart from some anomalously late usage in 1879 from Leh) that we can provide for the use of an old rectangular watercolor.
		This stamp was accompanied by two 1/2a and one 1a Jammu rectangulars in red, plus 1/2a British postage, for a total of 6 1/2a on a registered cover to Amritsar dated 07 April 1878.
		Interestingly, this same date is also taken to be the latest known postal use of a circular, namely the 1a steel-blue oilcolor circular on European laid paper (Eames.) There was also continued, if sporadic, use of the 1/2a brownish-red circulars, mostly on the ever-popular Jammu to Amritsar run viâ Sialkot.

		Inns and vacation hotels flourished, many farmers took in summer guests by the week, cottages were built along the lakes, old abandoned farm houses were all spruced up and given a new life.
