 The First Century
Lang's emphasis on the disparate interests of Australia and Britain, his insistence on Australia's readiness for separation, and his belief in the capacity of a republican Australia to invigorate all aspects of Australian culture are similar to the tenets held by the 1990s Australian Republican Movement.
In nineteenth-century Australia there were two distinct periods during whichdiscussion on republicanism took place: the decade before the granting of self-government in 1856 and the 15 years prior to federation in 1901.
Both the French Revolution of 1789 and the 1776 American War of Independence ensured that the concept of republicanism carried to Australia was closely associated with democratic government, the rejection of English rule and the distinct possibility of revolution.
