About the first day of May 1886 the working men of Chicago and of other industrial centers in the United States were greatly excited upon the subject of inducing their employers to reduce the time, during which they should be required to labor on each day, to eight hours.
One of the witnesses testifies, that in January 1886 at the Arbeiter Zeitung office he had an interview with the defendant Spies, at which one of the Czar bombs here to fore referred to, was produced and shown by Spies, and afterwards carried away by the witness.
He was present on the afternoon of May 3rd 1886, at the attack hereafter mentioned of a mob of strikers upon a manufacturing establishment in the south western part of the city, and must have heard the address of Spies of that occasion.

During 1886, as a result of the land boom and increasing population in San Diego, the company's business increased rapidly, and in December of that year, the directors decided to enlarge the gas plant.
The plant, located at Second and I Streets, consisted of arc light machines that supplied current to a number of arc lamps mounted on steel towers, some of which were 125 feet in height.
However, the Jenney company's venture was financially unsuccessful, and late in the year 1886 its electric plant and properties were purchased by E.S. Babcock, who headed a business organization that had begun, in 1885, the development of Coronado.

In 1886 one writer from abroad sought to capture Chicago in a sentence: "An overwhelming pall of smoke, streets filled with busy, quick-moving people; a vast aggregation of railways, vessels and traffic of all kinds; a paramount devotion to the Almighty Dollar."
On May 1, 1886, they proposed, the workers should simply seize the eight-hour day and shut the gates on any factory that did not comply.
One historian writes, "It was little more than a gesture which, because of the changed conditions of 1886, became a revolutionary threat." A vast churning took place among workers nationally.

While this is usually an indication that something has been changed after the gun was manufacture, this is not always the case.
In fact, it is not all that uncommon for 1886 records to be inaccurate concerning calibers....after all, in the end, the chamberings increased from 3 to eventually 10.
This is almost certainly a typographical error given how unique and rare the early style caliber markings are on this gun....we double-checked the records and did learn that the very next gun after 72, serial number 73 "is" listed as a 40-82 lending more probability that this was a simple mix-up in the factory ledgers.

A quick look at a planetarium prog earlier today showed that the moon was a bright mag -12.5 and very waxing gibbous at 15.0 UT Nov 1886 _Gregorian_, and quite high in the sky at 3 am [although I have not checked specifically for Shanghai's long/lat].
On 15.0 UT Nov 1886 _Julian_ the moon was very nearly new, and would have been new the next night.
