Mining was difficult, but new and excellent methods of coal cleaning were introduced and pioneer work was done in the use of electricity for underground haulage.
Unfortunately, the very next year, a tremendous explosion occurred in the mine, and as the fan and its machinery were destroyed by the fire, the men who were trapped in the mine suffocated.
This mine was troubled by the presence of a quantity of sulphur which gave most distressing fumes, and an explosion in May, 1915, took the lives of 26 men.

Number One Mine on the edge of downtown Nanaimo was the city’s major employer from 1883 to 1938, the miners, in some years as many as 1,400, having emptied it of 18 million tons of coal.
A sturdily-built sign and plaque marking the mine’s site and commemorating the deaths of the men who died in the 1887 mine disaster was built at the corner of Esplanade and Milton Street.
The coal mining exhibit at Nanaimo District Museum was extensively updated and reopened on 24 February 2001 and an interpretive plaque detailing the history of the Chinese community and the four Chinatowns in Nanaimo was erected a little later at the China Steps on Victoria Crescent.

The mine entrance was at the foot of Dickson Street, close to the edge of the harbour.
Some of the widowers may have lost their wives before they settled in South Ward, but it's likely that many of the widows lost their husbands in mining accidents, including the devasting mine explosion of 1887 which claimed the lives of 148 men.
Nanaimo's most important man, Samuel Robins, who was the superintendent of the New Vancouver Coal Company, also lived here amid a splendid garden near the corner of Esplanade and Irwin Street.
