In 1889 a storm caught three German warships in port at Apia, in Samoa, and in the course of a day the gunboats Adler and Eber were wrecked and the corvette Olga heavily damaged.
Their mere presence had a tremendous inhibiting effect on the movement of merchant shipping, and when they began bombing raids on Northern Australia there was some panic in the Australian colonies.
Latrobe was delivered in a six week flight in early 1889 and a local crew recruited from the ranks of the Victorian Navy.

Bland had initially been transported to Australia as a convict for killing a ship's purser in a duel but was quickly pardoned once he arrived and became Australia's first private doctor.
His flight of approximately 115 yards at altitudes of 2 to 15 feet and at a speed of 36 mph ended in a crash landing when he lost control grabbing for his hat blown off in the wind.
He was killed in an aircrash in the Apennines, in Italy while attempting a record flight to Australia.

Giles eventually returned to Victoria where he worked as a land classifier then moved to Coolgardie in Western Australia where he was a clerk in the warden’s office.
Ernest Giles published several works detailing his travels across Australia and was made a knight of the crown of Italy and an honorary member of many Continental societies.

To provide for the Catholic education of the children in his extensive parish he founded at Penola in 1866 the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, placing a Miss Mary MacKillop in charge of the first school.

Vincent Roth was born in Australia in 1889 in Australia, put into a convent at the age of ten months on the death of his mother and brought up by relatives in France and Scotland until he was reunited with his father and stepmother in Australia at the age of twelve.
After a brief spell as a newspaper reporter, Vincent Roth joined the Lands and Mines Department, for which he worked as a surveyor and Warden/Magistrate for the next twenty-five years, until a second bout of flwater fever forced his retirement from the bush.
Much later, his son-in-law, Michael Bennett, who had worked as an engineer in Guyana, edited Roth’s voluminous diaries, which he had kept almost daily from his boyhood in Australia, complete with sketches and later water colours.
