Art instruction in drawing and painting was first offered at the University of Arkansas in 1874 for non-degree credit.
In 1894, the Art Department was re-established by the Board of Trustees, and the University catalog stated that in the art program, "Patience and perserverance, rather than talent, are the qualifications essential to success." The department prospered.
The first art major program of study leading to a bachelor of arts degree was introduced in 1929.

Early in the twentieth century, for instance, artists expanded the definition of art to include such things as abstraction, collage, and readymades.
Thanks to art, instead of seeing a single world, our own, we see it multiply until we have before us as many worlds as there are original artists.

Francisco Bayeu was one of the most successful Spanish artists, along with Mariano Salvador Maella, at the court of Charles III (King of Spain 1759—1788), where the presence and influence of foreign artists, such as Giambattista Tiepolo and Anton Raphael Mengs, were still very strong, although this situation was slowly changing.
His style as a fresco painter was formed in the Italian painterly tradition of Corrado Giaquinto, passed on through Bayeu’s teacher González Velázquez and combined with the cooler Neo-classical style represented in Madrid by Mengs.
