The 1890s in Paris, forever popularized as the time of the can-can and cabaret, was a period of unparalleled printmaking activity.
This exhibition of approximately 200 works, drawn from the Museum's collection and augmented with loans from New York collections, focuses on the private and public aspects of printmaking during this pivotal stage in the history of the modern print.
Prints were created as objects of private contemplation for the homes of a new generation of bourgeois collectors, but they also appeared in new venues throughout the public arena.

 1890s in fashion at AllExperts
Fashionable women's clothing styles shed some of the extravagances of previous decades (so that skirts were neither crinolined as in the 1850s, nor protrudingly bustled in back as in the late 1860s and mid-1880s, nor tight as in the late 1870s), but corseting continued unmitigated, or even slightly increased in severity.
Early 1890s dresses consisted of a tight bodice with the skirt gathered at the waist and falling more naturally over the hips and undergarments than in previous years.
The 1890s in both Europe and saw growing acceptance of artistic or aesthetic dress as mainstream fashion, especially in the adoption of the uncorseted tea gown for at-home wear.

The decade of the 1890s is quite compelling; it represents the high flowering of an older, quaint America together with social, political, and intellectual trends that would move the nation rapidly into the modernity familiar to us today.
During the 1890's people felt under stress from industrialization, economic centralization and also from the severe depression the country was going through.
Those of the 1890's feared the change of the lives of the farmers with industrialization, while those of the 1990's feared a "ubiquitous, iniquitous liberalism." These comparisons are offered in the introduction, but not given directly in the book.
