Mike's Baseball Rants: September 2003 Archives
If we are not sure how many walks Ted Williams drew in 1941, one of baseball's biggest hitting stars in one of its most memorable seasons, estimating the number of pitches thrown by a pitcher a hundred years ago of course involves a good deal of guesswork.
From 1956 to 1966 the award was given to the only one pitcher in all of baseball, but since 1967 it has been given to one pitcher per league.
There has been only one team in baseball history that has gone from World Series champion to last place.

African Americans in the Sports Arena
It is said that "by the Civil War (1861-1865), slaves and free blacks were engaging in every sport imaginable." Those sports which took hold and became crowd pleasers were Boxing, Horse Racing, Baseball, Cycling, Football, Track and Field, and, later on, Basketball.
By 1834, Robin Carver had published his Book of Sports which spelled out the ground rules necessary to govern the different sports, including those participants wanting to compete in the American sports arena.
All participants in American sports started out as exhibitors using games or physical skills in a competitive fashion as a means of entertainment.

Minnesota's First Major League Baseball Game
The first—and until the Minnesota Twins arrived, the only—official major league game played in the state took place Friday, October 2, 1891 between Columbus and Milwaukee of the American Association, one of the last games played in the ten-year-old Association, which would fold at the end of the season.
Although Minnesota was represented by a major league team as early as 1884, when St. Paul played nine games in the Union Association, local fans didn’t get a chance to see the big show as all of the team’s games were played on the road.
Both Milwaukee and Minneapolis had teams in the Western League the next year, but it would not be until 1961 that another regular-season, major league game would be played in Minnesota.

 Clem's Baseball ~ 19th Century Major Leagues
The first true professional baseball organization was the National League, founded in 1876.
The Players League seems to have been inspired by utopian labor rights' philosophies that were prevalent in the late 19th Century, but this being America, it couldn't last.
It was later challenged by the American Association (1882-1891), the Union Association (1884), and the Players League (1890).
