In ‘The Genius of Carlyle’ (published in his Essays on Literature and Philosophy, 1892), Caird attested to the influence of the writings of Thomas Carlyle on many members of the Old Mortality, going so far as to describe the latter as ‘the greatest literary influence on my own student days’ (vol.
Yet Caird was a radical, and admired John Bright as well as concurring with Green and Nichol in support of the North in the American Civil War.
It was one of Caird’s distinctions that he was not afraid to look to a poet, such as Wordsworth, rather than a philosopher, such as Rousseau, for truths about man’s spirituality.

 Edward Caird [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
In his two volumes of Essays on Literature and Philosophy (1892), he brought together critical essays on Goethe, Rousseau, Carlyle, Dante and Wordsworth, with a discussion (in Volume II) of Cartesianism (Descartes, Malbranche and Spinoza) and metaphysics.
He supported the education of women, opposed the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) and, like Green, was involved in the 'university settlement' programs--particularly in Glasgow and in London--where recent university graduates and professionals attempted to narrow the gap between social classes by living and working among and with the poor.

In 1840 the Dexter Lectureship on Biblical Literature was united with this professorship, but in 1903-1904 was separated and united with the Bussey Professorship of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation.
Upon the death of Samuel Eliot, in 1820, the President and Fellows were informed that he had been the founder, and the chair was named the Eliot Professorship of Greek Literature.
In 1903-1904 the Dexter Lectureship on Biblical Literature was united with this Professorship.
