River of Song: Music Along the River
Music was one of the last areas of American Indian culture to receive serious attention from scholars.
Trained in classical Western art music, they applied their skills at transcription and analysis, but from their European cultural bias they invariably arrived at conclusions that today are generally recognized as ethnocentric and dated.
Another feature of Indian music that sets it apart from musical traditions elsewhere in the world is that the singers provide their own percussion.

I countered by asking Herr Joachim whether it was not true that national songs of most countries were the foundation of the music of each country.
I pursued the question, upon which the Professor was not eager to give an opinion, because he said it was rather a subject upon which an entire book could be written than one which he could dismiss in a few words.

The music is very varied in style (and perhaps also variable in quality though never lacking intrigue and surprise) but a Schumann-like exuberance is one hallmark as is a mystic urge, a Straussian sympathy for the human voice and an uncannily premature tendency towards tone-clusters and experimental techniques we more readily associate with the 1960s.
Music of the Spheres was completed during the last two years of the Great War, premiered in Karlsruhe and then given in Berlin.
Mystically rich, the Mahlerian chasm of this music is intensified by a passionate violin solo and the clarinet part - as in Rosenkavalier 'Presentation of the rose'.
