of the contribution to literature made in the course of ages by the writers of Ehgland, is planned so as to give a comprehensive view, the details as to particular authors and their work, and special consideration of the greater writers, being given in the separate articles devoted to them.
English literature in the 20th century still preserves some of the old arrangements and some of the consecrated phrases of patronage and aristocracy; but the circumstances of its production were profoundly changed during the changes.
But to predict the direction of change in literature is even more futile than to predict the direction of change in human history, for of all factors of history, literature, if one of the most permanent, is also one of the least calculable.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: German Literature
Literature as an art suffered by being pressed into the service of religious controversy; it became polemic or didactic, and its prevailing form was prose.
Its effect on the German language was enormous; the dialect in which it is written, a Middle German dialect used in the chancery of Upper Saxony, became gradually the norm for both Protestant and Catholic writers, and is thus the basis of the modern literary German.
Literature was devoid of originality and substance; the formal side absorbed the chief attention of the writers.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Irish Literature
Early Irish literature and the sagas relating to the pre-Christian period of Irish history abound with references to ogham writing, which was almost certainly of pagan origin, and which continued to be employed up to the Christianization of the island.
After the substantially pagan efforts may come the early Christian literature, especially the lives of the saints, which are both numerous and valuable, visions, homilies, commentaries on the Scriptures, monastic rules, prayers, hymns, and all possible kinds of religious and didactic poetry.
Above all it is hard to accuse of time-serving or of pusillanimity a poet who could imperil his popularity in England by such a vigorous melody as that in which he compares the oppression of Ireland to the captivity of the Jews and prophecies the destruction of her tyrant.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Gay Literature
In this sense, gay literature is written only by writers who, in the first place, identify as gay and subscribe to the ethos and ideology of gay liberation; and who also – and this does not, by any means, follow automatically – identify as gay writers or lesbian writers.
As a consequence, homosexual literature of this period was often plaintive and apologetic.
For the most part, all that might now be described as lesbian literature was confined to the private manuscripts-letters, diaries and commonplace books in which individual women reflected on their own lives and their affections for other women.

The arcadian theme in art, literature, and community planning served as a critical response to the threat of mechanized society and its potential infringement against human nature.
In her analysis of anti-industrial themes in Spanish literature, Litwak (1975) described the arcadian "propaganda" for beauty in contrast with the ugliness of modern society.
She epitomizes the arcadian enemy with the London Exposition of 1851, "where it was proclaimed that art and industry could live together for a happier future" (p.

 African American Literature
The writers used literature not only to call for the abolition of slavery in the U.S. but to point to the particular needs of the free fl population and to voice their demands for full citizenship and equal participation in the life of the republic.
In the late 1820s and throughout the 1830s free fls crafted and distributed literature that was intended to combat charges of racial inferiority, validate their calls for social justice, and alert their audience to the disparity between American ideals and racial inequality.
In part because late-20th-century definitions of "literature" differ so radically from those of the early 19th century, the rich store of writings that free fls contributed to newspapers has seldom found its way into anthologies of the antebellum African American literary work.

By that, I don't mean the literature that Americans have written since Americans first existed-whether that is understood to be 1776, or 1607, or 1492, or the dawn of the Cenozoic era.
