He began his literary career in 1875 as a critic for the Academy, and for ten years was actively engaged in journalism, becoming an important member of the staff of the Saturday Review.
His first book, A Primer of French Literature (1880), and his Short History of French Literature (1882; 6th ed., Oxford, 1901), were followed by a series of editions of French classics and of books and articles on the history of French literature, which made him the most prominent English authority on the subject.
He edited the series of Periods of European Literature, contributing the volumes on The Flourishing of Romance and the Rise of Allegory (1897), and The Earlier Renaissance (190!).

In 1896, he joined the staff of the Fifth National College in Kumamoto, and in 1900, he was sent to England as a government scholar.

 Hawthorn: A LITERATURE REVIEW.
Following the publication of Jennings's 1896 paper in the New York Medical Journal, a number of physicians engaged the services of Lloyd Brothers to introduce a preparation of the ripe fruits of hawthorn to the medical practice.
A number of articles from the medical literature from 1896 1916, including case histories, are reproduced in the Lloyd Brothers Treatise on Crataegus (Lloyd 1917).
While mentioned in early texts for use as a diuretic, astringent, or in the treatment of dyspepsia, historical references to the cardiac-affecting properties of hawthorn fruits are absent from the literature prior to 1896.

As we construct a historicized genealogy of various notions of American literature, we will bring a great deal of recent scholarship to bear on a number of documents including novels, literary histories, anthologies, bibliographical tools, and scholarly editions.
Students will investigate various late nineteenth-century and twentieth-century efforts to construct different canons of American literature in order to understand how literary canons are extensions of and circumscribed by larger networks of cultural and political relations.
One's final grade for the semester will be based upon the grades from your reading notes (20%), ten short 10-15 minute oral reports (30%) and one 15-20 page research paper exclusive of notes and a list of works cited (50%).

The incredibly beautiful story "Winter Dreams" will strike a resonant chord with anyone who has every realized the gossamer nature of their most cherrished love illusions--I could go on about virtually every story in the Book--and for at least a little while I shall.
Not a big fan of "Diamond Big as the Ritz", or "Benjamin Button", but they are interesting as exercises in literature for anyone drawn to fantasy.
However when Fitgerald is dealing in a lyrical way with he topics which made Gatsby the Greatest Book of the century; as he does frequently, he is not to be surpassed.
