Religion in Canada, during the first half of the 20th century, played a formidable role in crystallizing the cultural, social, and economic forces of the country.
Between 1898 and 1948, the Bahá'í Faith, as a missionizing religion, managed to attract over 550 people--all Canadians, three-quarters of whom remained Bahá'ís for the rest of their lives.
Given the religious singleness of the early Bahá'ís in Canada, the length of Bahá'í membership as an expression of commitment, was remarkable.

He believed that Canada's progress depended on the cultivation of patriotism and unity, and this conviction was reflected in his desire to see a wider history curriculum developed in Canadian schools.

originsof the Bahai Faith in Canada
Although Canada sent delegates to the National Convention from its earliest years, the book does not list them (A footnote [fn 1, p276] notes that there were eleven Canadian delegates to National Convention by 1947), nor does it discuss in detail possible issues relating to representation and the operation of the Bahá'’ electdoral system.
In the Australian context, to make a comparative note, the communication that individuals, communities, and fledgling Bahá'’ institutions had with Shoghi Effendi often had considerable impact on their subsequent attitudes and behaviour, and it would be hard to write a history of the Australian Bahá'’ Community without constant reference to this interaction.
The Origins of the Bahá'’ Community of Canada does not highlight such communications in the Canadian context, leaving the reader curious, given that an earlier publication, Messages to Canada (Toronto: 1965), does not include any of Shoghi Effendi’s pre-1948 correspondence except for his first message of 1923.

The Origins of the Bahá'í Community of Canada, 1898-1948 by Christopher Buck   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
The Bah_'_ faith became the first religion in Canada to gain official recognition through an Act of Parliament when, in April 1949, the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bah_'_s of Canada (the annually elected governing Bah_'_ council which oversees all `Local Spiritual Assemblies' across Canada) was incorporated.
Will C. van den Hoonaard's The Origins of the Bahá'í Community of Canada, 1898-1948 provides the background which led up to this unusual event and chronicles the transplantation, social adaptation, and development of an originally non-Western religion introduced in Canada in the early twentieth century.
Van den Hoonaard succeeds in identifying some distinctive social features of this religious newcomer, the importance of which has been underscored by the recent appearance of several world religions texts that conclude with chapters on the Bah_'_ faith as the latest of the independent world religions.
