  First World War.com - The Western Front Today - 18th Division Memorial, Trones Wood
The British 18th Division had three memorials erected in their honour after the war: at Clapham Junction in the Ypres Salient; and at Thiepval and Trones Wood in the Somme.
On 14 July, during the opening of the third stage of the Somme Offensive, 18th Division secured the wood from the Germans.
The memorial to 18th Division was placed in the years before the wood was re-grown.

From July 18th to 25th it attacked, as a unit of the 1st Corps in the Aisne-Marne offensive (second Battle of the Marne), penetrating to a depth of seventeen kilometers.
The division was engaged in operations north of Verdun from Oct. 18th to Nov. 11th.

The 18th Fighter Division was established in May 1951 at Guangzhou and was organized with the 52nd and 54th regiments.
The 18th Division took part in combat operations in the Korean War and scored combat kills against KMT aircraft flying over the mainland.

 The World War II Lecture Institute
The mission of the First Division was to expand and consolidate the corridor leading north, at the same time permanently hemming in the large German forces in the Ruhr.
Orders were received whereby the First Division was to be relieved in position on the west bank of the Rhine River by the 8th Infantry Division, and then assemble in areas preparatory to movement across the Rhine River into the Remagen bridgehead.
At the close of March 16th, all units of the First Division were in assembly areas preliminary to the attack scheduled for March 17, 1945.

The division was relieved on the night of July 30th-31st, and from then to August 6th was in rest in the vicinity of Jaulgonne on the Marne.
Upon relief of the division, it moved to a position south of the Argonne forest, and on Sept. 20th took part of the sector extending from Boureuilles on the east to Cote 285 on the west.
The division was ordered to the Eperlecques training area (Pas-de-Calais) and remained there until July 4th, when it was ordered into Belgium under command of the 2d British Corps and placed in support of the 33d and 49th British divisions.

The 10th Russian division was bivouacked around the farm north of Mlava, the 7th was bivouacked in Mlava itself, the 12th division was moving west of town and the 18th division was moving northwest, having just cut northwest across the highway which runs due west from Mlava.
All French divisions were facing east, and their artillery was converged into a massed battery which covered the open area on both side of the main highway.
At the same time, the Austrian division arrived on the line adjoining the now reforming Russian 18th division, and in the near distance could be seen the Russian 10th division marching out to join the 18th and the Austrians.

Division toward the port of Messina where the Germans and Italians were struggling to evacuate their remaining forces across the Straits of Calabria to Italy.
Division was in almost constant combat, working the paddies, canals, rivers, and swamps of the northern Delta, fertile Long An Province, and the Plain of Reeds to thwart a third enemy attempt to attack Saigon.
Elements of the division began departing in July and the division was officially inactivated at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii on September 25, 1969.

As the Tropic Lightning Division pushed toward the town of Umingan the 35th was released to the 25th and prepared to participate in the upcoming operation.
Strong opposition by 25th Division advocates caused the plan to be modified to the extent that elements the 14th and 27th Infantry were retained in the 25th Division but such was not to be with the 35th Infantry.
During the Civil War the predecessor of the 11th Infantry was in the 2nd Division, V Corps, the badge of which was a white Maltese cross; the 18th Infantry was in the 1st Division, XIV Corps, with a red acorn as the badge.

The fortress fell a fortnight later, and the division, the first to leave England on the new establishment of 1941, had been prodigally thrown to the winds.

On 9th October, 13 18th Division Sapper ORs (mainly from 560th) were in the first of five parties of 650 transferred from River Valley Road to Banpong.
The 18th Division Sappers among the Japanese parties were dispersed in small groups (typically between two and six in number) throughout the camps serving Japanese industry with slave labour from the drift coal mines of Ashibetsu to the shipyards of Nagasaki, with camps such as Sakata, Onahama, Funatsu and Omine in between.
THE author is indebted to many ex-POW survivors of 18th Division RE who have tolerated his questioning over many years and to those of them who have read through the draft of this article.

It is a copy of the Trones Wood memorial and bears the inscription "this is my command, that ye love one another".
