18th and Vine in Kansas City is internationally recognized as one of the cradles of jazz.
Vine Street also has been celebrated by many songs including "Vine St. Bustle," "Vine St. Boogie," "Vine St. Drag" and "Kansas City." Joe Turner immortalized the corner of 18th and Vine and club manager, Piney Brown, when he recorded "Piney Brown Blues" for the Decca label in November, 1940.
The decline of the historic district began in 1940 with the demise of the Pendergast Machine.

The Historic Foundation tried unsuccessfully in 2000 to have the 18th and Vine area removed from the National Register because several historic buildings in the area had already fallen.
The city canceled its 18th and Vine contract with the Housing and Economic Development Financing Corp. after questions arose about the agency's spending to renovate two houses in the unrelated Beacon Hill building project.
Both say they remember some private owners allowing historic buildings in the area to deteriorate until their roofs caved in and they had to be demolished.

As mentioned in the Historical Context, Black flight due to desegregation, suburban freeways, malls and the radio brought an end to the district's vitality of 18th and Vine in the late 1950s-early 1960s.
The heritage of 18th and Vine's was restored in 1997 after a $26 million redevelopment project.

It functioned out of a small, one room office in the Lincoln Building, which is located in the Historic 18th and Vine Jazz District of Kansas City, MO. It quickly incorporated, built a board of directors and staffing, and created a licensing program to support operations.
The 18th and Vine historic district was the center for fl culture and life in Kansas City from the late 1800s-1960s.

The contract has been awarded to a partnership of Barsto Construction and minority-owned Malco Steel Inc. The two had bid for the work more than a year ago and will be equal partners.
Doug Sharpe, project manager for Barsto, said he was approached several weeks ago about picking up the work at 18th and Vine, where Barsto and Malco already were serving as general contractor on a 46-unit seniors housing project on Woodland Avenue next to the Centennial Church.
