Hollis as a rural town has architecture, which was practical, simple, with the purpose of keeping the occupants warm and dry with no fuss.
In fact, the range of our architecture is broad, of many styles and periods, eclectic, and as several owners lived in the same house, maintained and "updated" it, many changes over the years on a given house have enhanced the appearance of the house and maintained the integrity of the original style or did not.
This is an overview with a focus on the old styles in the center of town and in the farm architecture throughout town.

 VLN: S.F. Architecture 1900-1902
In 1902, the architectural supplement to the San Francisco periodical Town Talk called the original design "A modern, superbly appointed, fire proof building, now in the course of construction." It was designed for the Bullock and Jones Co., who occupied the lower two floors, with offices above.
At that time it was a two part vertical composition, strongly skeletal in expression with the principal differentiation between the 2-story base and the shaft being the color of the decorative tile cladding.
This building represents both the skeletal, Chicago-derived aspect of the city's buildings and the influence of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and also serves as an integral element in the progressively taller buildings on the block whose cornices change in design and color at every step.

Other manneristic devices are used to counterpoint eighteenth-century reserve in the residence Coxhead designed in 1899 for Sarah Spooner, a rich Philadelphian who had recently moved to San Francisco and deovted much of her time to collecting art (Fig.
The irony of combining sources that were considered stylish and banal in London would not be caught by most observers on the West Coast; however, Coxhead developed a more obvious tension between the house and its setting.
Originally designed by Willis Polk in 1900 and built in 1901, this building underwent extensive interior remodeling by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum in 1980 and represents one of the fine warehouse buildings in the north Embarcadero district (Woodbridge and Woodbridge 1992: 53; Longstreth 1998: 432).

Modern Architecture since 1900 is an impressive overview, delving into the late 18th century and 19th century roots as well.

In the first mentioned chapter, Curtis charted the rise of the avant-garde in Russia, its leading figures, and its confrontation with the Constructivists.

Unlike a variety of books which seek to cover architectural history, this one is lively and at times provocative.
What I found most appealing was Curtis's frequent inclusion of the ideational content of the architecture, a view of architecture as a result of so many cultural forces, which explains why some formal expressions enjoyed popularity in certain eras.
This is the 3rd edition of this book, and Curtis has certainly expanded his knowledge, to encompass areas of the world not covered in previous editions.

As the noted historian of architecture Wolfgang Pehnt himself grants immediately in the preface to his book Deutsche Architektur seit 1900 (German Architecture Since 1900), every summary survey of this subject exposes itself to the criticism that it is subjective and incomplete.
Pehnt tells the exciting story of expressionist architecture and relates the development of the Bauhaus and the New Architecture without neglecting the great variety of modernist architecture.
With the same discrimination, Pehnt describes the various forms of the architecture of the Third Reich, ranging from official buildings, through housing developments and industrial buildings, to cautiously modernist private housing.
