The film charts the rise and divergent courses of communism and fascism, as embodied by Olmo (Gerard Depardieu) and Alfredo (Robert DeNiro).
And although 1900 is filled with the Maestro’s visual panache, and he fills the accepted mandate of an epic, it misses the small things, the basic character things that make an epic transcend its historical roots.
Then we hear from master DP Vittorio Storaro who says the film was shot to include all four seasons of the year, with its symbolic value the main reasoning.

  The Legend of 1900
The "1900" of the title isn't a year, but a man, abandoned as a newborn on an ocean liner, raised by the crew, and named after the year he was born.
The other main character in the film is 1900's friend, a trumpet player who enters the picture in the mid twenties, and narrates the film in flashback through a framing device set around 1950.
She said, "this film looks and sounds beautiful, but what is the point?" I guess the point is that beauty is truth, or at least it can be your truth in certain circumstances, if you allow it to be.

 Film Titles: Numbers
It's a film that turns away from the introspection of Bertolluci's previous films and aims, instead, for a popular movie of the class struggle using the style of both American epics and the lyrical Soviet cinema of the 1930's.
According to Bertolucci, 1900 is a "recollection, a collage of my childhood, my friends, and of my father." While he came from a middle-class family, he spent much of his childhood with the peasants in the Parma countryside where he was born in 1941 - and many of these experiences directly informed 1900.
The film is structured with the rhythm of the seasons; boyhood scenes are set in the warmth of summer, autumn and winter for the rise of Mussolini to power, and finally springtime for the resurgence of hope and freedom that followed the defeat of the fascists at the end of World War II.

Filmtracks: The Legend of 1900 (Ennio Morricone)
The film tells the tale of a young man dubbed "1900" (Tim Roth) who is born, raised, and lives his entire life on board an ocean liner.
In late 1998, the film and score album received simultaneous release in some foreign countries under the title "The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean." Arriving on American shores, the film took on a new title, a shorter film length by 45 minutes, and a different score release.
For 1900, the Sony Classical label backs Morricone's music with an unusually strong promotional campaign as far as score albums are concerned; the record label advertises the album alongside the film's theatrical, television, and radio trailers.

"1900" is about the political history of Italy in the 20th Century, told from the point of view of two best friends.
1900 is one of Bernardo Bertolucci's adventures in epic filmmaking that never found the reception he had hoped for.
The film, with a decidedly socialist agenda, examines two lives that begin the same year in rural Italy: the weak-willed son of the aristocracy (Robert De Niro) and the hardy, courageous son of peasants (Gerard Depardieu).

There’s the film’s exuberant centerpiece, a piano duel with famous Jelly Roll Morton (Clarence Williams III), which culminates in a thrillingly theatrical gesture.
As a matter of fact, most of the time I wished 1900 were a silent film: the power of the images is astounding, and the dialogue only tends to dilute the impact.

A key element in examining Olmo’s childhood is the fact that he is illegitimate and throughout the film, his father’s identity is never proclaimed, as it is relatively unimportant.
Earlier in the film, Alfredo had been unwilling to help Olmo in his time of suffering because he was jealous of him even then, jealous at what he could not take away from him.
He cut the film to 255 minutes, and this was the version that was initially released in America.

1900 is an ambitious five hour film from one of Italy's greatest directors, Bernardo Bertolucci, and it was supposed to be his masterwork, his overview of Italy's modern history.
Films rated below five are generally awful even if you like that kind of film - this score is roughly equivalent to one and a half stars from the critics or a D on our scale.
Any film rated C- or better is recommended for fans of that type of film, but films with this rating should be approached with caution by mainstream audiences, who may find them incompetent or repulsive or both.

The danger from the point of view of this apartheid arrangement was that you would have creeping literacy and creeping knowledge and so you had to have a ceiling and beyond that ceiling no one safely should be allowed to go.

The Legend of 1900 Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"The Legend of 1900" is the latest masterpiece from acclaimed director Giuseppe Tornatore, the man behind the Oscar-winning "Cinema Paradiso", marking his return to film-making after a four year absence (his last film was 1995's "The Star Maker").
Based on the novel by Alessandro Baricco, "The Legend of 1900" is not only Tornatore's first English-language film, but it is probably his most ambitious film to date, a five-decade epic that takes place aboard the confines of a cruise ship.
And though the film is still a remarkable achievement despite the re-editing, it is readily apparent that the emotional resonance of the story has taken a hit in the interest of brevity.

These short films were called "actualities." Very little storytelling took place before the turn of the century, due mostly to technological limitations: cameras could hold only very small amounts of film; many of the first films are a minute or less in length.
The newsreel tradition is an important tradition in documentary film; newsreels were also sometimes staged but were usually reenactments of events that had already happened, not attempts to steer events as they were in the process of happening.
Frank Capra's Why We Fight newsreel series was explicitly contracted as a propaganda series, in response to Leni Riefenstahl's film Triumph of the Will; the series covered different aspects of World War II and had the daunting task of persuading the United States public to go to war.
