Nobel Prize in Literature - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded annually to an author from any country who has, in the words of Alfred Nobel, produced "the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency".
However, the award continues to generate some amount of controversy as more famous names in literature are sometimes neglected in favor of less widely received ones, as in Dario Fo in 1997.
Members of the Academy, members of literature academies and societies, professors of literature and language, former Nobel literature laureates, and the presidents of writers' organizations are all allowed to nominate a candidate.

The most famous of these, and one which also achieved the desired effect, was submitted as early as 1901, when a large number of the members of the French Academy jointly endorsed the name of Sully Prudhomme.
Instead it should assert "the transcendence of literature over the political unrest of the period" and function as "the international arbitrator of scholarship […] refusing to allow its serenity to be disturbed by contact with profane concerns".
Nobel's wording in his will that the prize was to be awarded to a work published during the "preceding year" was formulated less stringently in the statutes but this does not mean that the age of the work for which the award is made is always unproblematic.

Twentieth Century Literature: Critical Dreams: Orientalism, Modernism, and the Meaning of Pound's China   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
From the early moments of his career in London to his final days in Italy, Pound made China part of his general project to rethink the nature of the West, to discover in poetry the best that humans had ever said or thought, painted or sung, and renew it.
Said insists that the literary academy's separation of politics from literature has concealed its cultural and political contribution to imperialism and goes on to suggest that the West cannot seriously study its own literature unless it considers that literature's relation to its political and social context.
Such claims, which offer a powerful explanatory narrative of the history of Western literature, have been less often applied to twentieth-century literature (and to modernism) than they have to the writing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
