The beginnings of comparative literature may be traced to Muhammad Rawhi al-Khalidi's book on French and Arab literature in 1902, followed by Sulayman al-Bustani's commentaries on the 'Iliad.' However, these efforts failed to impose an Arabic point of view in favor of writing in terms of western writers.
They are more concerned with learning about foreign literature than in establishing the way Arabic literature differs from foreign forms.
