Car racing began on the island in 1904 with the first motorcycles permitted in 1907.
The TT races are extremely dangerous because of the combination of high speeds and narrow, twisting roads and streets often lined by stone walls, trees and even buildings.
Held in the last week of May and the first week of June, the TT races create a wonderful carnival atmosphere.
