The collection spans the period from the turn of the nineteenth century to the 1880s, although a majority of the song sheets were published during the height of the craze, from the 1850s to the 1870s.
The Inventions of Note Sheet Music Collection was established in 1997 by the Lewis Music Library at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
This music was compiled by Alfred Whital Stern (1881-1960), who is considered the greatest private collector of materials relating to the life and times of Abraham Lincoln.

This is a surprisingly diverse and deep record, featuring varied instruments like cello, violin, trumpet, clarinet, and organ in addition to traditional pop band standards.
Though mellow and lush, 1909 can't really be given the twee tag as it's more grandiose and complex than is typically expected from the genre.
As far as sweet and mellow indie pop music goes, 1909 is top of the line.

This differentiation does establish the split between music for education (Public School Music) and music for performance (Orchestral and Band, Pianoforte, and Voice) that would exist for many years to come.
In 1934, long-time head of the Music/Public School Music Department Charles A. Fullerton retired from the regular instructional faculty and moved to the Extension Division.
