	VLN: S.F. Architecture 1910-1912
		One of the Bay Area's greatest architectural monuments, this church is Maybeck's masterpiece, showing his ability to combine such unrelated styles as Gothic and Oriental with an admixture of Romanesque and Craftsman.
		His contributions to domestic design are outstanding and his efforts in architectural education noteworthy; but it is the Christian Science church, with its masterly handling of space, structure, color and light, that wins immediate admiration from lay and professional viewers.
		His lack of preconceived architectural solutions to the problems he faced coupled with his complete domination of every detail of the basic structure, mechanical systems, and furnishings of the church helped create a building noteworthy in the history of American architecture (Cardwell 1977: 122-30).

	VLN: S.F. Architecture 1909-1910
		The Chinese telephone exchange, built in 1912 on Washington Street near Grant, was a major architectural contribution to the rebuilding of the city.
		One Sansome Street at Market and Sansome (22) is a neoclassical building (1910) designed by Albert Pissis for the London-Paris National Bank, added onto by Kelham, and gutted to become the entrance portico to the undistinguished Citicorp Center (1984) by Pereira and Associates at its rear.
		The "architecture," therefore, was kept up a couple of stories, out of harm's way, where it would survive countless changes of fashion as the permanent expression of a timeless architectural tradition.

		All lobbied for regulation of architecture by the state, arguing that protection of the health, safety, and welfare of the state's citizens required it.
		In later years, as architectural education developed in Texas and nationally, the requirements for obtaining Texas architectural registration became tougher, eventually specifying that candidates for licensure be graduates of accredited university architecture programs and that they have several years of professional experience under the supervision of qualified practitioners.
